I have been struggling with the total carbs per day. could someone help with a rough guide on what my total carb intake for a day should be. I am Type 2 and am currently trying to shed pounds as well.

There really is no standard amount. If you can get a blood glucose meter and see how your levels react after eating that is a really good indication of what you can cope with.
If you can get hold of a copy of Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution - I like the 2003 version myself, that might help with weightloss specifically.
Copies used to be available for pennies.
I use the Tee2 meter from Spirit Healthcare, as it is cheap to run.

Agree with @Drummer and @grovesy, there is no standard amount. I aim for around 100g as do some others and some aim much lower.

One way in is to estimate the number of carbs you are consuming now by writing down, being brutally honest, everything you eat and drink and calculating the carb content of each and adding the lot up. It will involve a bit of weighing, a lot of packet label reading, some looking up and a bit of calculating.

This will do three things.

It will get you into the swing of carb estimation - it gets less work as you go on.

You can use the figure you get to set your target - say half what you are eating now.

You can use your findings to look for things to do to get your target.

I personally am a great believer in making modifications to what you are eating rather wholesale changes in diet. Seems to me that is easier to organise and maintain. I appreciate that method does not suit everybody.

Hello @MickW
As others have said, the amount of carbs we can tolerate is as variable as there are people living with T2. A way to find out what is best for is to keep a diary and total the carbs and see what level works for you.
Personally I find that keeping between 50g and 70g a day works for me, and if I let this creep up, not only my BG levels but also my weight starts to creep up alongside it.

From the weight point of view I also find it is best to moderate high saturate fats and limit these to mainly oily fish, olive oil, avacado, nuts, cottage cheese etc. - but I know that other people don't have a problem with this.
Good luck - and keep measuring to get your answer.

I’ve split the discussion about fructose into it’s own thread as a courtesy to the original poster. You can find it here: https://forum.diabetes.org.uk/boards/threads/fructose.88891/

As others have said @MickW, everyone is different and you have to find the balance that works for you and is sustainable long-term.

Many members here seem to find that this is around 100-130g of carbs per day. But lots more need to go down further to 70-90g a day to get the results they are looking for.

Good luck finding your own balance 🙂

Different T2 people - different quantities of carbs, different carbs and possibly at different times of day and in combination with different other foods.

The only sensible way to know which foods are right for an individual is by trial and error. The fastest mean of doing this is by testing before each meal and then 2hrs after (first bite) of that meal with a Blood Glucose meter. Those of us who did that learned very quickly what works for us as individuals.

Yes like I am okay with a sandwich with insulin, most fillings but not tuna in oil! Drives my levels crazy despite being low on carbs!
It’s all trial and error until you find what is beta for you
