Tooth / gum infection,
I went to the dentist with a painful tooth, they took the filling out saying that it was loose, undersome how !!!! the filling were fermenting raspberry seeds!! That was a couple of weeks ago, yesterday I was back at the dentist as the tooth was uncomfortable -- and loose and gum swollen -- told -- take antibiotics and go back in a week, this is all very well ? this morning my face is enormous ? stiff -- I can not open my mouth far enough to put much in it. Any advice on diet for the next few days?? I am off to the Dr this morning ?but I have had exceptionally good advice from this group in the past, and would appreciate help this time. uther than tie it to a brick!!!! I have though of that one but I am sure that it would be to painful -- any spelling mistakes are duee to a helpful puppy

I am sorry to hear this Andrew. I have had something similar in the past - at that time the dentist told me that the antibiotics hadn't worked, although if you've only been taking them for a day then yours won't have had much chance to start working yet - hopefully, things will ease over the next few days. There may be different antibiotics you can try if things don't improve. In my case I ended up losing the tooth, although it was in a very bad way to start with, having been root-filled and several subsequent fillings so wasn't worth saving. Hopefully you will fare better 🙂

I'd try and stick to things you don't need to chew, like soups. Your doctor might be able to give you something for the pain - you can take alternate paracetamol and ibuprofen if it helps.

living in hope

These things always seem to happen at Bank Holidays - I was diagnosed on a BH Monday! 🙄 Just to add that you should try and keep your levels as good as you can - keep the carbs to a minimum, as higher levels will encourage the infection and make it harder for the antibiotics to kill off the bad bacteria.

Using hot salty water as mouthwash to swill round whole mouth, but especially the sore gum area, then spit out has several beneficial effects - pain relief and disinfection.

In addition, paracetmol, ibuprofen and codeine all have pain relief properties, paracetamol and inbuprofen both reduce inflammation / swelling and high temeprature due to infection, and codeine is particularly good for nerve / tooth pain. However, all have groups of people for whom they are not suitable, so do seek advice from a pharmacist - there will be at least one pharmacy shop open each day over bank holiday weekend, so check before setting out to one.

This is largely based on advice given to me by a dental nurse who I knew socially in my early 20s, when I have a bit of gip from an erupting wisdom tooth - which found its correct location within a few months and never needed to be removed, some 25 years later 🙂

I like Copepod's suggestion about the hot salty water. When I eventually had to admit defeat with my troublesome back toooth and it was removed, that was precisely the advice to help the gum heal afterwards. Which it did very nicely.

But your GP should be able to help on the infection/antibiotic front too.

Andy 🙂

I had something similar a couple of years ago and I lived on porridge, soup and cheesy mashed cauliflower.

i have tried

I have tried the porridge ? and for dinner sorted cauliflower , however jaw is now swollen to the point were movement is minimal !"! Dr at 3.30 in the fridge are a small selection of Aldi breakfast yogurt with cereals.

I hope the tooth is better now or at least not as sore. I like soup bananas and custard and custard and ice cream and mash, but most of that is not diabetic friendly.

The wram salty water will help if you're not able to brush properly and a good moutj wash may help too.

Post Dr

Well the Dr was not at all impressed with dentists medication offering --
Following her poking around in my mouth and subsequent revision ---
I now have another 5 items --- 3 pain killers and 2 antibiotics to add to my pills ---- wow -- just trying to swallow them all is a slow job, the last comment from the Dr --- do not chew anything!!!!!!!! The mere idea is a fantasy .

Good to hear your doctor didn't leave you with inadequate medication Andrew - hope the new regime brings you much relief! 🙂

This may be a bit late, but you could ask the dispensing pharmacy if they could give you liquid forms of your medicines, ibuprofen, paracetamol and codeine all come as liquids as do most antibiotics. Soluble paracetamol is fairly easy to come by, as is ibuprofen liquid, unfortunately you might have to take a large quantity of the liquids coz they tend to be designed for kids.

Thank you all

Hi Many thanks for your thoughts -- after 5 days on tramadol I am as high as a kite -- and rattling like mad, the swelling is now down a lot -- so worth it, I like the salt water --- it does not sting as much as the mouth wash!! dentist thursday

Glad to hear the infection / swelling is going down at last. Take care coming off the Tramadol, gradually is best.

Post Dentist

Swelling down -- pain down -- lay in the chair ? dentest comment --- we will just take a quick look then we will just take a x ray --- oh good thinks I after 3 attempts to vomit the plate over the dentist ? x ray achieved minutes later Its got to come out - make an appointment on your way out. well at least the pain and swelling have gone.😱

Hi

Sorry it looks like you'll lose the tooth but glad the pain & swelling have improved.

I lost a tooth following an infection 2 days before Christmas. I also found switching to a soft toothbrush for a while helped as did the salt water & the antibiotics.
