Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I am very lucky that some of my food cravings are for fruit & salad, as as have been losing weight I am happy to eat lots of both.

My brother now tells me that it is possible for a diabetic to eat too much fruit.😱

I fnd it hard to believe, especailly when chomping through punnets of cherries.

what is the truth? is is possible to each too much or is it ok to indulge as much as I like?

Fruit contains sugar thus you can't eat all you like. Apples are about 15g carb per apple, an Orange is probably nearer 20g carb and grapes are 15-20g carb per 100 gram of grapes. Cherries are 11% carb so probably not as bad as the others, depends how much you eat..

All fruits contain carbohydrate, so they will have an impact on blood glucose levels. On the other hand, fruit contains lots of vitamins and minerals and most of them are pretty low GI.

I guess the correct answer is; only your meter will tell you.

Cherry being an example is apparently about 10-11% Carb and has an index of 20-22. So you would probably have to scoff the entire punnet.

Do you have the carbs and cals book by collins gem thats a good guide,Itry and avoid the fruits i think are the highest in sugar but afraid my faves are grapes but they have no effect so im ok, but if i had strawberries or banana it would send me into the teens 🙄

😱OMG😱 tht is bad news.............so how much sugar are we allowed to eat for type 2:( I thought I WAS DOING SO WELL losing weight and all that....it seems I cant do right for doing wrong..............its bloody confusing this diabetes milarky😎

My consultant has encouraged me to carry on eating fruit, I have a Apple, banana, pineapple everyday. Sometimes I will eat an Orange, a handful of fruit etc. Dr said apple morn and banana afternoon. These are my in-between snacks. Like the others have said, eat and then test to see what / if you get spikes. Can you see a dietician ? Xxx

Don't worry you were doing well 🙂 Everyone of us is different so ultimately only blood glucose results will really tell you if something is doing you badly or not. Steff stated she will spike with strawberry's, for me they don't do anything.

The GMNT was told that there are some fruits he can eat freely (strawberries, for example), but others, like cherries, that he should eat a portion of as part of a meal. Cherries and bananas are pudding fruits. Strawbrries and raspberries are munch any time fruits.

Guidelines may be different for Type 2's.

Eat as much fruit as you want as it is a good source of vitamins and natural fibre, only your blood glucose meter will tell you how much is too much and there are loads of lower carb fruits available in greengrocers and supermarket shelves.

Also, remember that fruit juice on fingers can give false high finger prick results!
Personally, I'm enjoying at least 2 bowls of strawberries a day as we're picking so much from our garden we have to eat to keep up! I don't need any extra insulin to cover.
