Toes

Every time I cut my toe nails the skin on the big toe of my right foot goes very red and painful for a couple of days also looks infected then is ok again until the next time I cut my nails.

Does anyone know what might be happening please?

I must admit that I haven't 😱 but this has prompted me and I will mention this, thank you 🙂

What you might want to do is try filing your nails down rather than cutting them. Yes, it's more time consuming but possibly might give you a better 'cut' overall without promoting ingrowing toenails.

On a slightly perverse level, I LOVE getting an ingrowing nail (providing I get it fixed in 24 hours). It's massively satisfying to prize out a jagged chunk that's digging in!

Had the same problem, when cutting the nail it sometimes left a point on the side of the nail that I could not always get to due to the ingrowing nails.

A visit to the podiatrist followed by a very short visit to the hospital day surgery finally resolved the problem. I had the nails permanently removed on the offending toes.

I could of opted for the removal of the side of the nails leaving the bulk of the nail intact, I preferred the no maintenance option.

Crikey that seems drastic, I thought the first course of action for ingrowing toenails was to place a bit of cotton wool under the corner to encourage correct growth.

Might be a bit drastic to have the nails permanently removed, but I am no longer in pain from the nails. I had the nails removed before as a nipper to see if they would regrow correctly, which they didn't.
