Hi All,

I have been having lots of problems with toe nails - literally dropping off - including big toe nail. I showed them to the nurse a year ago but she didn't seem concerned at all. She was only concerned that I could feel on all parts of my feet - and told me there was a little loss of sensitivity on one foot around the ankle!!

My feet are now starting to embarass me - I used to have lovely feet and in summer love to wear flip flops but people have started to notice my missing nails.

Because I was told its nothing to worry about I have been ignoring it and putting it down to sport, but I am now wondering if I should take it more seriously?

I also have a long running heel problem - it really hurts and is stiff in the morning and is probably just from running - but again I feel I am wasting the GP time if I bother them.

Should I do something or not?🙂

Hi Lucy

It must feel awful to have your toe nails dropping off. In my town, as a diabetic, you are allowed to self-refer yourself to the NHS podiatrist. If you phone up the podiatry department at your general hospital, explaining that you are diabetic, they may be able to tell you how you can get an appointment. I think your nurse sounds very complacent considering how important it is for diabetics to look after their feet

Thanks AJ - I have an appointment with my consultant in October and didn't know whether to wait or go back to GP - not sure consultant is right person to ask either.🙂

If you can afford it would well be worth a seeing a podarist private for a full diabetic check. It could be an indication of a circulation problem resulting is lack of nourishment to the nail bed from whence the nail grows.

I wound certainly make an appointment with your doc as soon as you can. Get the ball rolling and he will be able to tell you who's the best person to see about it. It sounds horrid. I hope you get some answers soon. XXXXX

See your doctor or the podiatrist. The nail falling off may be the result of a fungal infection. When I showed the practice nurse she said take more vitamin c, when I saw the doctor he went ballistic (for a change) and started treatment for a ungal infection.

Hi, definitely get an appointment! Don't feel bad about wasting their time because you're not and the nurse probably should have treated it in the first place! I mean, it might not be serious but there must be a reason for it and getting treatment would be sensible. Good luck xx

I totally agree with the above. Anything dropping off is not good and should be investigated throughly. I hope you get the proper care for your poor feet soon. Take care Sheena
