...is called Peter, Hello <waves>

Diagnosed 2 weeks ago after telling my GP I just felt tired all the time, oh hungry and thursty too.

He cycles a bit, speed skates and is trying to deal with this new full time job that I seem to have aquired
The mood swings of the first week have settled a bit but I'm still surprised my wife hasn't moved out
Made so many errors to start with* but I would think that is standard

Now getting out and about, and greatly looking forward to a few more "firsts" that I used to enjoy from the before times

*and I assume I still am and will do, hopefully none of them serious.

Hi Peter,
Glad you have found this forum even though none of us wish to be here.
The diabetes diagnosis does take a lot of adjustment but the important things are be patient whilst you gain a better understanding of how your body responds to medication etc.
But be sure in time you will be able to do all of the things you currently enjoy with some adjustments but you will, effectively live a normal life and you dont need to give up anything.

Welcome.

After 20 years in I still make mistakes. We are only human. It’s about knowing what to do if something goes wrong and doing the best you can with the right life balance.

For example on Tuesday I completely forgot to have my lunchtime insulin and then got high alerts going off. Corrected and was fine.

Glad you’ve found us, as @Wendal said it’s not a club anyone wants to be in or even we like adding another too but welcome, here for any questions you have or just as support.

Welcome @Skater P

Sorry about your diagnosis but very pleased that you have found the forum.
It is a lot to get your head round at the start, but it definitely gets easier.
All we each do is the best that we can.

Tapping into the wealth of experience on here helps.
Ask any questions that arise.

Hi @Skater P and welcome to the forum - sorry you had to join us (but a nice way!) - it is very difficult at first and a lot of it is trial and error to begin with, but you've found the right place for support here - please ask any questions you may have, and someone will always pop along to help - glad you have found us

Welcome also from me, Peter. I prefer to think the process is one of trial and learning, rather than trial and error. The errors we instinctively want to forget, whereas every day is a learning day.

One book I found very helpful was Gary Scheiner's "Think Like a Pancreas". He's a US citizen, diagnosed T1 late teens/or his early 20's (forgotten exactly which) and has become an established (well recognised) US Health Care Practicioner (HCP) specialising in managing sport and diabetes. Early on in his very readable book he tells his readers that Diabetes is Complicated, Confusing and Contradictory. Despite this realistic overview of diabetes, it is also something you can manage to deal with; it does need a bit of time to work out how!

You have found a good start point with this forum. Wealth of practical experience here. No question is stupid, we've all been Newbies.

Welcome to the forum @Skater P

Glad you have found us. We have literally centuries of lived diabetes experience to tap-into, and it can be really helpful to have the ‘hive mind’ of the forum to consult, or to be able to share your Diabetes Genius victories alongside your worries and disasters. Folks here ‘get it’.

As for making a blunder or two here and there… I’m reminded of @SB2015 ’s phrase of “trial and improvement” :D
