Just can't believe British Dietetic Association spokeswoman Melissa Little's response: it could be improved with an egg😱. a slice of white toast in between 2 slices of white bread with butter/marg, and only 55gram carb - must be good!

See here:http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-15752918

I don't know where she buys her eggs and sardines from - I bought both the other day and the eggs were ?1.65 for 6 (27.5p each) and sardines 62p a tin!

To quote a mid range supermarket as an example: Sainsbury's sell sardines in oil or tomato sauce at 49p for 120g tin. Eggs from 69p for 6 Basics eggs (barn reared hens).

Both still above the 8p per egg and 19p for half a tin of sardines. Perhaps she shops in Lidl/Aldi/Netto?

I could NOT believe this when I saw it on breakfast this morning (while running on a treadmill).

There was some chemist bloke saying there was a challenge to come up with a better 'meal' at lower cost.

I think you;d be hard pushed to find a worse one 😡

I would imagine that the white bread in Mrs. Beeton's time was not the highly refined product it is these days. Certainly, I can think of 8% of the population who would not find this to be a good meal!

The egg would lower the GI but there's no mention of using a healthier alternative. The cheapness seems to be the only concern. And how many people actually need to reduce their meal cost to a few pence to survive ?

Very silly.

Certainly wouldn't use white bread for a start, a toasted sarnie with oily fish is an ideal light lunch provided the bread you use is healthy too.
