Hi Everyone

Still coming to terms with my T2 , diagnosed at the start of January 2024 .
Have cut right down on carbs and was okay to start with but now starting to feel tired
around mid afternoon .
Full time job , but still somewhat confused as to the amount of carbs I should be consuming .
60 years young , 5.10 height .
Regards .

Hi and welcome
The suggested amount of daily carbs for Type 2 is less than 130gm. But everyone is different and it can take some experimentation to get the right value for your body. It is advised not to cut back too quickly as that can affect your eyes temporarily. I found I work best on 75-90gm a day - any less and I feel rough. I hope you increased your protein intake when you reduced your carbs. I have an app where I plan my food daily in advance so know exactly what my carb value will be.

Are you on Metformin? Metformin can reduce your B12 levels, making you feel very tired. It did me when I was first diagnosed. Some info here from the government website

Fatigue is fairly common on when starting a low carb diet. It usually goes away after a few weeks.

I went < 50g of carbs initially, mainly to lose weight quickly.

Thank you for replies , on Metformin and lost a considerable amount of weight .
Drinking plenty of water and eaten a good diet . Work can be demanding , moving a lot
but I feel I need more carbs to get me through the day .
Regards , Stevie

Carbs are going to increase blood glucose so a better option would be more protein, carbs can actually make you feel more hungry. Nature Valley or KIND or shop own Protein nut bars, cheese, boiled eggs, high protein yoghurt would be options.

Same here.

As you're diabetic, the carbs may not end up giving you energy, they'll just raise blood sugar which may make you feel tired.

I switched to a low carb diet with plenty of protein and good fats and never felt tired at all. (Unless I've had a bad night's sleep!).

The body is capable of making the glucose (And other things) it needs to fuel muscles and the brain.

Welcome to the forum @Stevie B

Well done on the weight loss.

Sorry to hear you’ve been feeling tired. Have you dramatically cut your calorie intake to encourage the weight loss to continue?
