Time for a HbA1c wager?

My last set of blood tests was in July when my HbA1c was 42 and my cholesterol just passed the "statin threshold".

It was agreed I would start on a low statin dose and have a blood test after 3 months to see how I was getting on and to check they were not causing liver problems.
So, I have just been to give my blood to the phlebotomist.
The surgery pharmacist had requested liver function and blood count tests only - the latter because my white blood cell count is always on the low side.
The phlebotomist noticed my next diabetes test was due at the start of January so she added that to save my time. We also added a cholesterol test to check the statins were actually doing something positive. Thankfully, it did not require any more blood.

The HbA1c was something I was really hoping to wait until January for because thanks to my broken elbow requiring two surgeries and limiting my exercise, my BG has been higher than usual over the last two months. There have been some shocking spikes after surgery but less exercise-related hypos. I am expecting a significant increase since July.

But how much?

(I think I might suggest I return in January, regardless. Otherwise, the next test won't be until July.)

Probably less bad than you think! When I feel I've done really badly, it’s only ever gone up by a maximum of 3,
So I’ll start the bidding at 45.

Don't wish to be overly negative but I am guessing 51

I will go with 44 as you deserve a good break after your bad break

my prediction is 44 , you might be surprised 🙂

Hi helli before I place my guess, I have a quick question for you , does your diabetes nurse comment that your current HbA1c at 42 is too low ? My DSN commented on mine at 49 , saying that they would like it to be 50 or slightly above but as I am not having lots of hypos she is happy at the moment but would be concerned if it went any lower .
Anyhow I will guess your new
HbA1c at 47 , is there a glittering prize for the winner

My Diabetes Clinic based DSN and consultant are very happy with my HbA1c. However, my GP surgery insists upon additional twice yearly tests and reviews. The GP surgery based DN struggles with the concept of Type 1 diabetes so I just go for the test results. However, in the summer, one of the GPs seemed to have some time on her hands and starting calling me while I was on holiday to express her concern. As I was on holiday, I did not answer calls from an unknown number so she left multiple messages. When I returned, I sent an SMS explaining how my pump manages my lows with auto suspend so there was no need to panic.
Seemed to be a case of a little knowledge is annoying and she should leave my diabetes management to the experts. But I did not say that.

The glittering prize is the smug feeling of being right or closest to being right.

Had the same from mine. T2 on insulin, Metformin and Dapa. Mine was 45, and she rang me and said they advise me to be at 53 if I’m on insulin. What she didn’t say was the remainder of the NICE guidelines that say “ however, if the pt is lower than this and does not have hypos, then they should be encouraged to continue”. I did re contact her and quoted the rest of the guidance, and said that I didn’t feel that I was getting much encouragement. We have had several “discussions” in the past, so it went down as well as you’d expect. . Think she read a book to get the job quite honestly. Close to changing GP at the moment.

2 decades ago (doing a conversion.) “58” was the target. Anything less? “You must be having too many hypos.” I hover around 46. It’s all a matter of opinion. The “HCP” hashtag don’t mean jack to me. Now I believe they want anyone over a “certain age” to raise A1cs to 58 instead of a fall during a low? Guessing the “jar of sweets” on this topic.

Will go with 60 @helli
I’ll raise your 60 & call 62. I will need to see the laboratory response from the OP. Omitting any personal ID of course.

Hope you are pleasantly surprised @helli

I’ll join the mid-table tussle with another vote for 47mmol/mol
