Hey all,

just wondered how likely it is that you can get thrush from diabetes??

do ur sugars have to be running high for a long period of time?

or can a high sugar, for a day or so cause it??

thanks.

Well I don't know scientific fact or anything... but I don't think short term high blood sugars help when it comes to thrush.

I have only been diagnosed two weeks ago and have had thrush my levels have never been below 14 since diagnosis. Know it might not help you but glad to know that it has a conection

same here pam , altho i was diagnosed 4 wk ago .

Hi girls,
I have had this problem too, really bad when I was in hospital for ketoacidosis. My understanding is it very hard for your body to fight infection when sugars run high and this is a very common problem for people with diabetes in this situation either at ketoacidosis/high BMs/time of diagnosis. Dont be shy about asking for a prescription, with the diabetes mild remedies wont necessarilly work and sometimes it needs treating one or more times with a one-dose tablet (Fluconazole). I was buying them over the counter in the chemist (cheaest ones I found were superdrug) approx ?10-?12 a time (easier than seeing the doc), then got them bulk on prescription for free incase of any future problems I dont want that agony again! Speak to your Phamacist as they can advise better than me. In these circumstances we are very susceptable so dont feel embarassed. Remember your partner may need treating too. Sorry to go all gung-ho about thrush, but I didnt know about this and when I got it I was very unhappy and uncomfortable and didnt get it sorted out because I didnt know what it was. x

Yeast loves damp moist sugar laden places to multiply. IE someone with uncontrolled blood sugars is an ideal host.
So the newly diagnosed have this to contend with as well as everything else.
Once your blood sugars come down the thrush should improve. If it doesn't ask your GP for some treatment to help it on it's way.
Some females tend to have reacurence when periods are due, due to the higher blood sugars and hormone imbalance.

You're not alone SugarBum I got a dose at my time of diagnosis as my levels had been sky high for a while. Once I was in control it had cleared up in I think in about two weeks. Not pleasant hope I don't get it again!

I had regular doses of (thankfully) pretty mild thrush for years before I was diagnosed. As I understand it the sugar in your wee when you're high sends the chemical balance off, which causes the yeast infection. Yet another fun symptom 🙄

I can second this! You can also get the active bacteria (lactobacillus acidophilus) from live yogurt in capsules from Holland and Barrat, which I've found really convenient and effective.

I had recurrent thrush about 3 years ago when my diabetes was poorly controlled, would get the treatment from my GP and it would work, then a few days later it would return.
Getting my blood sugars under control solved the problem and I haven't had it again since.

Hi,

Just to let you know that its not just the ladies that suffer from this!! I was diagnosed as diabetic 8 years ago because I couldn't get rid of thrush. To make it worse my wife at the time tried accusing me of cheating as she didn't have thrush so I was really glad to find the reason, although I would have preferred it not to be diabetes!!

Since diagnosis I have often had thrush, mainly when my control goes out of sync and for men it can be very painful as if you get it enough it causes the fore skin to split. Have tried multiple creams and steriods to get rid of it but it wasn't until I went on a pump and got my control better that the thrush and assoiciated pain has stopped.

Sorry to be graphic lol

Andy

I had thrush fairly constant for 2-3 months before diagnosis and for about a month after. Touch wood my levels are much better controlled and at present im ok. Ive always been susceptible to thrush though even before diabetes.
I dont use bubble bath, have fragrance free shower gel and use non-bio washing powder! Also cotton pants help and reduce sweating! These are things ive learnt over years to try and reduce risk of getting it.
Ive not found the oral tablet works for me, I have found the internal cream works for me. There are so many things on the market now to treat it. Think its just a case of finding the right thing for you.

yeah i tryed to look for topics on thrush before i posted one lol

thank you 🙂
