so out of the blue we seem to be getting random high numbers -we have been back from hols 5 days{ adjusted lantus and mealtime ratios for skiing when away] and have got a 19.2 before tea next day say 18.6 before bed . . 7,7/7.6 in the mornings so have changed both lantus and novorapids to fresh ones and added 1 to the lantus dose - so is this hormones ? end of honeymoon[ dx 16 months] or because theres a R in the month?

Very strange? The pens aren't damaged at all are they? Could be hormones, change of climate though, although I might expect numbers to come down rather than go up

What were the numbers like on holiday?

on hols we changed lantus from 11 to 9 and all meals 1-20 when skiing although it rained some days so we made it up as we went along!- generally ok ish in day an odd 10.4 13.2 here and there but that may be down to the kindly waiter giving him free liquers!! in the mornings 8.4 9.1 9.4 6.8 8.9 so not too bad and a lot of guessing on food and free puds!!

Are you back to the pre-holiday doses/ratios now?

yes we went back to 11 lantus the night we got back and all the usual ratios 1-15 1-12 1-12 have done 12 lantus the last 2 nights because 7.6/7.7/7.2/ etc in the mornings where as we tended to between 5-7 generally with the high 18.6/19.2 he does some maths addition the team gave us- hes back to school tomorrow so will see if that makes a difference - oh he does add abit on if hes sitting around revising too!

It is a puzzle! Less active since you got back I suppose. Hope things settle down once he is back in his routine 🙂

You changed your cartridges, but is it still out of boxes of insulin you took away with you? Could it be 'heat' damaged one way or the other, too hot or too cold more likely? If so, do you have a completely new box you didn't take away you could try some from?

Just a thought.

Tina

actually Tina good point and worth a try- although they did travel in frios!- a 9.4 this morning{ which we just never have] so something needs to change! will maybe up the lantus a notch although hes convinced going back to sch will settle things down

Hiya

When do you give the Lantus? If at night time then it could be run out by tea time and yes this could just be happening now as this is diabetes we are talking about that diabetes doesn't play by the rules. Lantus doesn't actually last the full 24 hours either by the way and could change. Most people can get around between 16 hours to 20 hours out of it generally.

If levels are ok the rest of the time then it probably isn't dodgy Lantus but maybe lantus running out by tea time (if you give it at nighttime) and growth hence the rise in the morning maybe. Do you do any night testing to see what is happening overnight. Might be worth doing random tests overnight to see what is happening. 🙂

How old is your child by the way?

Lantus is given at 6 pm each eve - we have never had high readings in the morning- generally 5-7 with an odd number thrown in occasionally!.Since we got back all the readings are higher than we usually have.We have done 12 lantus for the last 3 nights - so maybe we will try 13 tonight last 3 mornings were 7.2/7.7/9.4 .H is 16 now- dont think I could get him to do anymore testing!

Ah right 16, yes that could present a problem then 🙂 Do you test overnight? Would he let you do a bit of night testing for a few nights to see what happens.

It may well be that the Lantus is running out way before 6 pm hence the higher readings then

I dont think he will go for night time testing - why would the lantus start to run out now when it never ever has before?
