Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hello,
I'm Mitchell, I'm a 20 year old lad. I've been a type 1 diabetic for about a year and I've also got addison's disease and a underactive thyroid. It doesn't stop me doing anything i want to do, I still go out and drink a bit to much (for a diabetic) like any other 20 year old.

The only couple of things i have a slight problem with is my diet, I don't eat any fruit or veg, how do other diabetics with the problem of being picky with food. It's a year after I've not got fit again (probably me being lazy) but how did everyone else get fit after being diagnosed and I still am about the same weight as then (not as much as i want to be)

Thanks

Hi there Mitchell and a warm welcome to the forum , im a 27 year old type 2 but just wanted to welcome you along, there a good group of people on here your age and also the rest aint bad either lol..Food wise is they no veg at all you like, even the odd bit is better then none,i cant really advise on diet as im type 2 and eat diffirently but someone will be along soon to help x

Hi Mitchell welcome to the forum. I'm 22 and have had type 1 for almost 20 years.

Can't offer much advice in terms of getting fit as I'm in the same boat - trying but not getting anywhere. What do you enjoy doing - gym, running, cycling, watersports etc? Could you find something local in your area to go to? Where are you based?

Hi Mitchell welcome to the forum 🙂
I've also been type one for just over a year and not brilliant with my diet. If I can find soup thats one of my five a day then I go for it XD I've started looking through recipes that I might like & include veggies. I walk to & from work which isn't a lot but does help maintain my weight.
There are lots of hints/tips in the newbie stickys and recipe sections which may be of use to you
xx

Welcome to the forum Mitchell I am sure you will get a lot of help from people here.

Hi Mitchell, welcome to the forum 🙂 I think that it sounds like you need a bit of motivation to get exercising, and maybe also to get a bit more adventurous with your food 🙂 Just getting out and going for a walk each day will be a help, but the more you can mange, the better it will be for your ftness, your weight and your diabetic control. I don't know what sort of state you were in when you were diagnosed, but often people with Type 1 have lost a lot of weight due to dehydration and the body burning fat and even muscle tissue because it can't get enough energy from your blood sugar.

I was very underweight when diagnosed and it took me about 18 months to get bach to a more normal weight (put a bit too much on by now!). Regular exercise will help build dense muscle which will improve your weight and fitness. I've always been a runner, so got back into that as soon as I could.

Perhaps you could pick a goal and have something to aim for and work towards, like maybe a 10k run? Otherwise there's a danger that you'll just let things drift.

If you have any questions, please let us know and we'll try our best to help! 🙂

Hi Mitchy,

I'm the same age as yourself but only type one. Have been since I was five. As for eating healthily, well, I'm not exactly a shining example of that. I do alot of walking owing to a need to commute to work but I need to get into something else.
If I can be of any help just PM me or shout ina thread.

Tom

HI mitchell welcome to the forum 🙂 Im 20 myself and have recently been diagnosed. Before diagnosis I didnt do much excersise but ate quite well apart from the cookies, (the one thing I miss oh and curries), but I just make sure Im active during the day. If Im stopping in I try to get out for a walk or even break out the excersise dvd. Food wise I eat alot of soups, granary bread which i am obsessed with. I think its just getting used to the changes you have to make so later on you arent left wishing you had better control.
Hope everythings good
Emily

Welcome to the forum Mitchell,
What about popping to your local gym and having a chat to start with?
I did in June, and haven't looked back!

Welcome Mitchell...............I have quite a varied diet and don't exercise enough.... it doesn't mean you can't have good control......its just a lot easier...

Ask lots and lots of questions..... 🙂
