My name is John and I`m a 62 year old builder. Diagnosed type 2 in May this year with an Hba1c of 12.5. Am now on 1000mg Metformin twice a day plus 40mg of Gliclazide once. I have been testing since 20th June, average 5.2 - (hmm, I wonder why the nurse upped my Metformin?)
I thought something was wrong because I was drinking loads more than normal and I caught a smell of `pear drops`(keytones) on my breath.
Had a quiet word with my mum (type 2 for 30 years) who suggested a visit to the docs.
I read her (mums) book before l got to see the DN, so was ahead of her in most things, (cutting out my daily sugary drinks and 2 packets of crisps), but am booked in to have my eye checked when they come round at the end of the month. Also waiting for a space on the local `new diabetics course`.
I would like to express my thanks to the site for being here - I have learnt so much esp. regards to exercising and sugar levels!(of concern to me being in the building trade). Funnily enough, to help lose a couple or three stones I`ve had to start walking!
I am fortunate to have a good wife backing?, me up! Changing meals and checking labels more often than me!
So, at the moment I`m at the stage where I check that the carbs. are no higher than 12% to 14% and low fat!
I must say, reading the posts, that I think I have it easier than a lot of the members. I hope that by increasing my knowledge, I may be of some help in the future. 🙂 Regards.

Welcome to the forum John 🙂

Glad you found us!

John hi and a warm welcome to the forum pleased you found this place it's a godsend to many members

Hi John, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry you have to be here, but it does sound as thought you've made a good start to things with your Mum's help, what you have been reading here and of course your own hard work in getting things under control - well done! 🙂

As you may have noticed, we are a friendly bunch, and no topic is considered 'silly', nor is it expected that everyone should know everything, so if there is anything that confounds, confuses or causes you concerns let us know!

Welcome to the forum John, it sounds like you've already got a great handle on your diabetes, keep up the good work, that next HbA1c is going to be much improved 🙂

Welcome to the forum John.

Hi John, welcome to the forum.

If you lose that weight and keep the exercise up you may be able to just rely on diet and exercise only if you want.

That's what I did around 3-4 months following diagnosis.

One thing to consider. though. Metformin apparently has other statistically beneficial effects. According to the medical guys it can have a protective effect on the heart. Something which, statistically (again!) we (as type 2 diabetics) might have a greater propensity for. So it all needs to be balanced up. For me, I was happy to be medication-free.

Andy 🙂

Hello John,
welcome to the forum. 🙂

Hi John, and welcome!!

Thankyou all for the warm welcome! 🙂
As regards losing weight Andy, I feel that a little more progress might be made if I stop eating `bloomer` sandwiches with a sprinkling of finely grated strong cheddar in them!! That is my real battle! 🙄

Hello John, sounds as though you have a good head start, hope it all settles down for you quickly.

I found I made more progress when I pretty much dropped the cheddar from my diet ..... gawd how I miss having a block in the fridge all the time!! :D

Hi troy12, welcome to the forum 🙂 I removed your phone number and email as it is not a good idea to publish them on a public forum like this - you never know who might be reading.

I would suggest calling the Diabetes UK Careline so you can speak to someone about your friend, details are on this page:
