I had an appearance of some black specs in one eye, which stayed for a day or two then went, much to my relief. But then I noticed "threads" appeared, and on Friday got worse rather too quickly with some "flashing" in the peripheral vision. Saturday morning I contacted NHS Direct who said go to A&E, but eventually got hold of an out of hours Dr, only to be told to do the same.
So off I go fearing the worst. I spent 2 hours in a specialised eye casualty dept that I didn't know existed, and was seen by an eye doctor within an hour after various tests by a nurse including eye pressure, which were 15 and 17 , not sure what but those figures are ok she said. Not had that done before.
The doctor explained what she was doing all the time and diagnosed Posterior Vitreous Detachment which simply means that the jelly like substance in the eye is coming away from the retina! No major problem apparently provided there is no rapid lose which could cause a tear in the retina.
I was given a phone number to contact if I had anymore problems, and arrived home relieved, impressed and grateful for our fabulous NHS and those that work there. But I wont prevaricate next time.
Normal floaters are ok, its the rapid change in quantity that may indicate a problem, and the flashes, I was told.
Was ?15 taxi each way though!!!!!!!!
