but good diabetes management is about taking that advice and then adjusting it to what works for you.

Exactly that! It's the forum approach in a nutshell! Hear lots of options, experiences, and strategies form others with lived experience facing the same struggles as you every day... Try the one you like the sound of... see if it works, tweak it a bit. Or if it doesn't appeal, or doesn't work for you - try one of the (many) other options and strategies.

Keep plugging away at it, and eventually you'll have built a personalised diabetes toolkit of techniques and rules of thumb (plus inevitable exceptions to those rules) that work for you and your unique diabetes experience.
