Hey there!!

My name is Mandz and i'm almost 30 years old, to be fair you'd think i'd be better at this age but i've just not been able to get into it at all.

In 2004 I found out I was type 1 diabetic and was put straight onto 4 injections a day ... I went for months sticking to the routine but then went straight back to living how i wanted too ... Carrying everything about as well as all the comforting things i needed for my autistic child was just hell. Went back onto my insulin ... back off ... basically yo-yo'd back n forth over the past 6 years!! Well ... having recently moved to a new area I'm now determined now i'm registered with the new Doctors ... I'm sticking with it!!

I've been very very honest with them, told them I've barely bothered over the past year unless i've not been feeling well ... and they appreciated my honesty ... then told me i'm starting from scratch ... I'm now on one injection a day which is going to be upped no doubt next week when i go back to see the Doc. However ... it's gonna get me back into the routine of giving myself injections again!!

Basically ... I've signed up here to make friends ... hear about everyone's coping techniques and have fun!! (I just hope ya's don't hate me cause i've taken the michael since i found out haha!!)

Anyways ... Enough about me ... I'll meet ya's on the boards!! XxXxX

Hi mandz and a warm welcome from me i see your in the same area as me woop woop lol.
I'll be honest i think many of us sometimes have been abit blaze with our diabetes but tbh i dont hate you nor would anyone else, nobody wants this condition or likes to be dictated to by it... I do hope now things are going good that you do stick to it and now your here we will help you were we can to do so, have a good browse around and you will seeom become aqquainted with us all, welcome onboard x

p.s I also admire your honesty as well must of been difficult to do it but you did show it shows your willing and determined x

Welcome and good luck.
Good to hear that you've been honest with your team and that they're treating you as an individual and helping you to find a regime that works for you.
Even in the 6 years since you've been diagnosed, things have moved on eg shorter, finer needles, neater pen devices etc, which might help you get back in with several injections per day. If you can accept one (or two) long acting injections per day, plus one injection with each meal (called MDI for short - Multi / Multiple Daily Insulin / Injections) then it des give more flexibility eg you can inject after a meal, which might be helpful if you child means that you don't know at the start of a meal if you'll be able to finish it.

Hi Mandz, welcome to the forum 🙂 I'm a little confused about what you say about your insulin - surely a Type 1 would quickly get very ill without it? Also, I have never heard of a Type 1 only having one injection a day - what insulin are you using?

Hey there Steffie!!

Thanks so much for the warm welcome!! I'm having a good browse as we speak, there's lots of interesting posts by the looks of things so I've lots of good reading to do lol!! Thanks for the understanding and the support already!! It'll be great getting to know you all!! XxXxX

Hi Derisive One !

Well done for being so honest. With us and your doctors.

As Steff said, most of us have had good and bad times to some degree but its good that your doctor is getting back into it slowly.
You've obviously got a lot to cope with family wise, and plenty of us have put our own needs last in those situations.

Rob

Hey there Copepod and Northerner!!

They're starting me fresh with Lantus Solostar, 10 units per day to be taken at tea time, apparently it's a 24 hour insulin just to start with and they're gonna be reviewing it every week from now on until i'm stable. No doubt i'll have more injections to take next week when i've been reviewed!!

I used to be on 3 short acting injections and one longer acting insulin a day. With having an Autistic son it was difficult to keep ontop of what i was needing for him and myself every time we went out etc ... I always put his needs first and forgot about mine!!

The doctors down here are also very surprised that I've not been so ill over the past year, the only thing i've really suffered is the tiredness. Well that i've noticed anyway!! I went through a bout of depression last year which also didn't help my commitment towards my diabetes ... however ... I'm now on the up!!

XxXxX

Hey Rob and thank you also!!

My life has been a long and winding road!! There's plenty more that've been through worse however and they've done so much better than I lol!! Thanks so much for the understanding!! XxXxX

Welcome ot the forum and sorry you have to be here. Its great that you have been honest and hopefully we will all be able to support you going through this new regime and get you back on the right road. It must be so hard having to look after a little one too aswell as dealing with your own needs - so dont feel too bad about not keeping on top of things - at least you are determined to now.🙂Bev

hiya welcome to the forum im type 1 have been for 21 years and also glad to meet another mum with an autistic child my son is 5 and has higher functioning asd and sensory dysfunction , so i know how you feel in that respect , and i know how hard it is to concentrate on yourself when you spend all day (and night in my case) running round after an autistic child , i can help and support you in both cases here 🙂 feel free to pick my brains on either subject x

Hey there Bev and thanks for the lovely warm welcome, it's hard but everything works out!! I've just got little extra bits to add in again (and leave them remaining in place this time!!). Glad to have met you!! XxXxX

Why hello there Bex ... Thanks for the welcome and the understanding!! I completely sympathise with He had to stay with foster carers when my daughter had to be taken to hospital 90 miles from home and I needed to be with her as she didn't have long to live. First night he stayed with them he slept all night ... i felt mugged lol!! He's been good ever since however, goes to bed n stays there at 7pm, falls asleep at about 10 or 11 then gets up at 5 or 6am ... It's fantastic that i can actually get some sleep now lol!

Theo's been diagnosed with classic autism and sensory dysfunction also!! He's 8 years old with the mentality of a 2 year old. So lots of hard work!! If there's anything i can help with on either case (not that I'm too hot on diabetes yet) please do let me know also!!

Welcome to the forum Mandz.

Feel free to wander around the forum. Also, if you're in need of a frosty beverage and a warm sandy beach just make your way to the tropical island in the Off Subject forum! (Ok a little imagination will be required for that one!).

Andy 🙂

Thanks Andy!!

I'll be popping in all the time no doubt!! My presence shall be known you, can count on it!! :D

XxXxX

Hi Mandz , Welcome to a fellow newbie and thank you for your wecome message too 🙂

Thank you Jenny!! It's always nice to find happy welcoming fonts on forums ... so i like to show the love!!

hello again lol , blimey i would have felt mugged too lol , tyler is in bed at 7 but up periodily through the night from about 10 onwards and the SD! i seriously know the issues there lol , have to say though things have been easier for me since i got a pump..less thinking about needles lying about for a start! and my control is amazing now..its never been so good , i know the tiredness that comes with looking after autism but the bad control made it much worse for me , i think its great your on here its helped me so much to take control of the diabeties and the support is great (and helps me think about myself for a little while too)
its funny i often wondered if the was anybody out the with a simmilar situation to me... seems there is lol

I've wondered exactly the same!! I have to admit that it's really quite a relief to have met you ... Totally wish you weren't in the same situation but it's comforting!! Thanks so much for introducing yourself!! If my sugars don't seem to regulate with the insulin that i'm being told to take over the next few weeks I may suggest to them I'd like to use the pump ... reading through some of the threads on here it certainly seems to sound like a massive benefit!! XxXxX

:D i think the thing with the diabeties is dont try to do it all in one day ive been at it 21 yrs and only now am i getting it right lol , takes a while to digest all the info properly , i was like you and struggled with injections half the time id forget coz tyler needed something or have a meltdown while i was eating.... initially the pump is hard work and you need to know how to carb count but again its all about digesting the info , i did have to go back to the begining for a bit as i was in such a mess..but things are better now
:D your right it is kinda comforting meeting each other
and its been nice virtually meeting you😛

You've done yourself and your family proud darlin!! I shall strive to get ontop of things like you have ... even if it does take another 17 years lol!! I'd get my head around carb counting ... I'll maybe start practising now just incase lol!! Is there an idiots guide?! lolol XxXxX
