Well i went to hospital yesterday and had my little toe amputated - i went in at 7am and couldnt eat or drink from midnight - didnt have the op till 5pm :( felt very ill by the time i went to theatre. i think i may have even passed out before i was knocked out :( blood sugar went down from 12.9 to 6.9 before the op.

i came home the same day so it wasnt to bad - i have the nurse coming around today to change my dressing. i have no idea how the hole is. but my calf is feeling better now - i hope it heals fast 🙂

That's good that you're out of hospital. Hope you get better soon :D

Glad to hear it went ok Simon, hope it heals quickly 🙂

Bad that you were kept waiting so long though - I thought people with diabetes would be operated on first in the day. You must have felt dreadful going so long without food.....

Glad to see you are home Simon and hope things get better for you now.
Thanks for letting us know 🙂

You will heal better at home. Most people are sent home same day after minor ops.

that was a long time to go without food, hope that wasn't too traumatic for you and you will have a speedy recovery.

Glad you are home, and hope you have a speedy recovery! I can't believe you had to wait until 5pm... any ops I've had I've been in at 8am, but they've all been about 7 hour ops so I guess they take a whole day...

Xx

Glad to hear that the op is over and done with simon. Hope you have a speedy recovery and that you feel better soon. xx

Thanks for letting us all know how you went on Simon. Here's to a speedy recovery for you 🙂

I would suspect they wouldn't operate until his blood sugars were down to a reasonable level, operating on someone with a blood sugar of 12.9 is a no no due to the problems caused.
With numbers like that though I'm surprised simon isn't on insulin or that they didn't use an insulin drip on him.

Glad to hear things all done now and fingers crossed the healing process goes smoothly.

I certainly would have kicked up a fuss about not going in until 5pm though; Ds are always scheduled early on the op table! tut tut naughty hospital.

Let us know how the healing goes.

Glad to hear that you are home. I hope that you make a fast recovery.

Good to hear it's done and you're home, Simon. Hope all goes well with redressings and healing.

A long wait with no food / drink is uncomfortable, but not dangerous for someone not on insulin - in Simon's case, the wait brought levels down to normal range. However, as he was, presumably, on afternoon list, he could have eaten after midnight - say a light early breakfast of tea & toast at 0600. Delay could also have been caused / lengthened by other ops taking longer than anticipated.

thanks all 🙂 i did feel really ill by the time i went up, i kept falling asleep waiting for them to call me, not good when your a snorer 😉

Copepod - i was on the early list, i just kept getting bumped :(

Pumper_Sue - i wondered that too - my h1bca was 9 last time so 12.9 isnt much above it.

Glad you got through it OK Simon - best wishes for a speedy post-op recovery.

just had a phone call from the district nurse - even though i had a toe amputated and have no access to a car this doesn't give me an excuse for not going to the surgery to have my dressing changed. it'd cost me at least ?50 a week to get a taxi everyday 😡

That is absolutely ridiculous.

yep :( i just dont have the money for it!

Can you not stand your ground Simon and insist they come to you?
An amputation is a pretty big thing!
Can you walk on it yet?

hope you heal quickly Simon and manage to get the bandage changed regularly.

lucy123 - i'm going to talk to the nurse - if and when she comes about it :( its just mental - i can walk a bit but its odd.

cheers rossi_mac :D i hope so too! :D
