hello, I am Harry's mum. Harry was diagnosed with type 1 just over a week ago. He is 11 years old and is being very brave. He went into hospital as a emergency with DKA which was really scary. But he has recovered well and has also just started secondary school. Lots to learn and think about. I look forward to sharing experiences and expertise from you all.

Hi Harrys mum -glad youve found us so soon. Its hard at the start-with so much to take in- but it will get easier- honest. My son was diagnosed at 15 so over 18 months ago now.Has Harry gone back to school yet?

Welcome Harry's Mum 🙂. Sorry to hear of your son's diagnosis. My son was diagnosed aged 4 and has also just started secondary (he's in year 8, having been in middle school).

What insulin regime has your son been put on? Have you and his diabetes nurse been into the school to set up a school care plan? Do ask if you need any help or advice - it is quite hard at the start but does get easier!

I highly recommend getting a copy of this brilliant book:

Hello Harry's Mum, welcome. As a classic Type 2, I can't offer any advice re: T1 in young people, but here's a (((hug))) of support.

Hi Harry's mum, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear about your son's diagnosis :( What insulin regime is he on? I would recommend reading the following thread, put together by one of our members:

Hopefully, this will give you some insights into what you may expect. I would also recmmend looking in our Useful links thread for sources of good information and support. Particularly recommended is the 'Type 1 bible', Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Young People by Ragnar Hanas, which covers every aspect of living with Type 1. Any questions you may have, please let us know - there are lots of friendly, experienced people here who will be happy to help out 🙂 Try not to become overwhelmed by everything - it will get easier!

Hello Harry's Mum, I was 11 when I was diagnosed and like your son I was rushed into hospital with DKA. Welcome to the forum.

Hi Harry's mum
Sorry to hear about Harry's dramatic introduction to diabetes, what a shock. Starting secondary school too, never a dull moment.
My son was diagnosed aged 13 (now 16) and is doing just fine. There's loads to take in at first but some very good help out there - this forum being top of the list 🙂
The Ragnar Hanas book is brilliant. If you want to get stuck into carb counting (assuming Harry is on multiple daily injections) then 'carbs and cals' is good, and there's an app for smartphones if your son has one.
I also got great support from a fellow parent living nearby. Might be worth asking at school who else is diabetic? If the school is large there might be quite a few.
Bye for now
Catherine
