A government scientific adviser has said a third wave of the coronavirus pandemic is “definitely under way” as the vaccine programme races to outpace the Delta variant’s spread across the UK.

It comes after Public Health England reported a 79% rise in the number of cases of the variant first identified in India in just one week. Hospital cases have almost doubled.

Experts say the sudden increase is being driven by younger age groups. The vaccination programme was opened up to people aged 18 and over on Friday and surge testing is being rolled out in parts of south London and Cumbria.

Prof Adam Finn, who advises the government on the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI), on Saturday said a third wave of infections “is definitely under way”.

“It’s going up, perhaps we can be a little bit optimistic it’s not going up any faster, but nevertheless it’s going up, so this third wave is definitely under way,” he told Radio 4’s Today programme.

It's hardly surprising, really 🙄 We don't have anywhere near the same restrictions now as we had in the full lockdown, and we have a variant that is 60% more transmissible. Pretty sure the Scotland/England Euro match is going to spread it around quite a bit, not a lot of social distancing and mask-wearing, and travel across the country 😱

Hospitalisations have doubled in a week?
Where are you getting that data from?

According to the ONS we have 1250 in hospital now compared with 1061 a week ago in the UK as a whole.
In England alone you've gone from 884 to 1170 but that's a very long way away from double and most of those cases are much less serious than in the first 2 waves.

A comparison with a standard with a National flu epidemic when comparing hospital cases would be useful. Only then can we see whether the folk in hospital are dying at a greater rate than one would expect. I suspect that currently there isn’t any great difference.
