I reckon we've all had at least one of those said to us over the time we've been diagnosed - REALLY annoying. 😡 Engage brain before opening mouth ?

ah if only the human race engaged with this before speaking!!

I've lost count of the amount of times people have said 'but you don't look sick'...NO, that's because I'm not!! I have an auto-immune disease, but I am not sick.

and a funny one I've had loads at my new work is "oh I didn't know you were diabetic"....Nope, that's because I don't need to send a personal memo to each employee telling them!! lol. I don't hide it, but I don't broadcast it either.

Love this! 🙂 Do they think we should all get 'DIABETIC' tattoo'd on our foreheads when we're diagnosed to let the whole world know 😉

Maybe someone should start a range of T-Shirts with different (non-sick looking illness/ailments on them so people know what's up. 'Migrane', 'Asthma', 'Period Pain', etc. There are lots of afflictions that can cause you terrible trouble without you looking sick, many of which you wouldn't want to broadcast because they are PERSONAL and PRIVATE!!

It is not just what you should be careful of saying to someone with a chronic illness. Engage brain before mouth in many situations.

I have a t-shirt which says:

I am diabetic
Yes, I eat sugar
No, I'm not dying

:D:D:D

Thankfully no one had really made comments to me like this before. But I had a teacher when I was 6 or 7 who couldn't understand why I was so 'badly behaved' when I was hypo and kept calling my Mum into school! And I used to get punished for it too! And when I was 16 I went on holiday with my best friend and his family. I went hypo quite a lot because of the heat and his mum explained to passers-by that I was 'flaking out' which I found offensive 😡 and she told me at the end of the holiday that I wasn't allowed to go with them again!

Can i add one? Especially for docs and nurses at diabetic eye clinics on hearing you have / had retinopathy "hmph! You MUST be very badly controlled!" 😡

Actually, no...just unlucky & got D yonks befpre pumps & when i was very, very young!!! 🙄 Snarl...

Plus the fact that they are completely wrong as well!🙄 You can have some form of retinopathy even with good control. I've had background retinopathy since my first screening, but I don't think I could improve my control any more than I am doing.

I'm in the same position - by all accounts my control has been nigh on perfect since diagnosis, but I still got referred to the eye hospital a year or so ago.

Just one of many reasons I demanded a second opinion and had my eye care changed to another (wonderful, brilliant!!!) hospital! 🙂

I can tick off every single one ... I wish people were better educated too, but if they are ignorant I don't take offense (well, I try not too!) and I try to educate them
