Downing Street has insisted it stands by the government’s strict immigration regime, after Theresa May was accused of blocking requests to allow more overseas doctors to come to Britain to fill staff shortages in the NHS.

The Evening Standard reported on Tuesday that at least three government departments – including the Home Office – had urged Downing Street to lift visa quotas temporarily. May turned down the requests.

Up to 100 Indian doctors have reportedly had their applications for tier 2 visas turned down. These are offered to skilled workers from outside the EU with a job offer in Britain; but the number available is limited.

Danny Mortimer, the chief executive of NHS Employers, told the BBC recently he had heard of hundreds of doctors being refused visas – and the shortage was affecting patient care.

😡 :(

I was horrified when I read this. Though I was pleasant surprised to read that Jeremy Hunt had tried to pressure her .

So was I @grovesy, the latter I mean not the former. I've been angry with her before, but now I'm Disgusted, Bedworth.

I was reading tonight that Kent is short of around 250 GPs and they are blocking doctors coming to the UK - disgraceful

I was reading that just now. Somewhat gobsmacked by the comment made by the Chairman of Kent and Medway Sustainability and Transformation Partnership (STP) "Chair of the group Geoff Lymer added there is a need for a balance when it comes to recruiting "foreign doctors" so their home country does not lose its talent so training in the UK is essential."

Remind me again how long it takes to train a doctor? Or a nurse? 🙄 :( Also, given that we are a multi-ethnic society, we actually need doctors that can communicate well with all sections of society, particularly in the field of medical care. My GP is Indian and she is brilliant 🙂

5 years for the basic qualification -> https://www.anglia.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/medicine but then a number more if they want to practise as a GP or a specialist.

I know - I remember when I was at Uni and a friend of mine who was doing medicine told me he didn't expect to be fully-qualified in his chosen field until he was at least 30 😱 He went on to become a successful surgeon 🙂

Actually, this is true of a number of areas. You don't get all that many people who achieve Chartered Engineer status before they were 30... Even then you are still learning afterwards.

My DIL is just coming to the end of her GP training, she will qualify in August and will turn 30 in November so 11 years of uni & training. She did her medical degree in London, her F1 & 2 years in Liverpool and has come back to Kent to do her GP training. She will stay in Kent once qualified. She has worked long & hard to get where she is and has a huge student loan to repay. Jeremy Hunt has not been much help!

They, the Government, are making a real **** up of all of this. Each and every doctor I have seen for the past 20 years or so, except my GP, has been either an immigrant or of immigrant descent. Wonderful people in each and every case. My GP who is British, is married to a German lady and he will leave the UK to live in Germany should they start further restrictions. He told me that himself last year and has already obtained German citizenship for his Son.
Jeremy Hunt??? Well what can you say.
