Lack of sleep is to blame for children's behavioural problems at home and school, says one psychologist ? and it's busy parents who are to blame.

Scientific surveys released by TV channels to promote new programmes should always be treated with some scepticism. But when psychologist Professor Tanya Byron claimed that we are in the midst of a "sleep-deprivation crisis" that is "harming our children", there wasn't a parent in the land that didn't squirm with a pang of familiarity.

Just to hammer home the guilt, she added: "It generally stems from parents who are not teaching their children good sleep behaviour."

The question she has raised is not so much "why is this happening now?'' but "why haven't we addressed this sooner?''
