It has always amazed me how a teensy change to any of my basal rates makes shedloads of difference to BGs after doing it. They recommend no more than 10% at a time - but I've consistently decided to only adjust by 5% bearing in mind some of my rates are so low in the first place. (Total daily dose of basal c. 11u - I am very sensitive to insulin)

The only time that came completely unstuck was when I broke my knee and had to increase basal by 300% to begin with - and took 6 months ish (gradually reducing it as and when) to get back to normal for me. Gobsmacking, or what?

A CGM (whether a Libre or otherwise) gives all of us fantastic insight into what the heck our BG is doing at all sorts of times of the day and night when we wouldn't have ever thought of testing our BG.

Yes this was my thoughts when going over it in my mind. My thought were at the time to protect the children which were in each of our bedrooms which is why I told him to go downstairs. I just couldn’t trust him to be around them whilst he was acting this way - he’s 6ft 3 so hard to restrain if he decided to attempt something.

Understand , hopefully one off acting that way when hypo, cgm will help prevent them anyway.

That’s great news! Is it Libre, or one that connects with his insulin pump and can turn off insulin if he is going low and hadn’t noticed? (depending on whether he has a pump that can link to sensors)
He has a Medtronic MiniMed 640G pump and he’s going to have a Libre CGM so does not connect unfortunately.
She did mention within the next 12 weeks there’s some device which will connect and he may be able to trial it.

That is crazy! Sounds like you have great control though 🙂

Hi All, I’m the husband of Wife_of_T1_diabetic.
thank you all for your responses.

I’m really looking forward to getting the freestyle Libre to prevent this from happening again.
I would like to say how well my wife coped in the situation as I was completely oblivious of what was happening and she handled it very well .

With the CMG coming soon I would know if there is away to link it up to my Medtronic pump Minimed 640G?

thank you

Ah that’s great news that you have the MM640G, that means you can consider self-funding the Guardian G3 sensors to get access to Smartguard, predictive low glucose suspend.

The sensors aren’t cheap, but I found the extra over the cost of self-funding Libre well worth it. Initially I self funded for approx half the year (restarting the sensors to double their lifespan). It cost about £1000-1500 a year, so not far off ‘a takeaway coffee and something’ a day, or a takeaway a week. That meant I could run approx one sensor a month (10-14 days’ worth)

While running smartguard I hugely reduced my amount of hypoglycaemia (by approx 90%) especially overnight.

I think there might be ‘we are not waiting’ open source ways of linking Libre with MM640G possibly via Miao Miao (or similar) xDrip and AAPS, but I get the feeling the loop/APS community doesn’t generally recommend using Libre?

Thank you for your response, we unfortunately just can’t afford the self funding option for this to link to the pump.

I have heard that there is a way on the ‘black market’ if you will to connect it to the Libre. Not sure how that would be done though.
it’s such a shame the guardian G3 sensors are so expensive

I am guessing you are talking about open source APS and/or looping?

Tim Street is a good read on the subject, and a nice guy. There’s some stuff about using Libre for APS data here

I laugh at inappropriate things if I go hypo , or I just cry and cry . Luckily my family and work colleagues are very understanding .
