According to Cook Children's Health Care System in Fort Worth, 13,000 children are diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in the U.S. every year.
More than 1 million American children and adults battle the disease each day, along with its constant seesaw of high and low blood sugar levels. They must prick their fingers multiple times a day to check their blood sugar level and count carbohydrates for all of the food they eat. They must also inject insulin into their bodies to try to maintain a normal blood sugar level.
