The face mask test: which are the best at limiting the spread of Covid?

Seriously, wouldn't this whole lockdown disaster be easier to swallow if the government had made it unlawful to smoke rather than making it unlawful to not wear a mask? Would that not protect the NHS and save lives and free up beds?

They're two almost entirely independent things, not things you'd trade off against each other.

You could consider making it unlawful to smoke but I really don't see that as being practical. I presume there are still efforts to try to help people to give up smoking though I'd also guess that some of those are more challenging with physical distancing.

(I'm not sure the government really sees mask wearing as a health measure as such. Or at least not all of the government thinks that. I'm fairly sure it was presented as a measure that would help people feel safer in the sense that if everyone's wearing a mask you might feel safer going into shops. I think it probably does make us all a little safer, but I'm not sure the government cares that much.)

Never seen them going to same measures for smoking or alcohol.

Because those have never threatened to overwhelm the NHS. A problem that's doubling in size every couple of weeks (because it's infectious) is a different kind of thing than smoking or alcohol use.
