Back in June, I thought at least some of my prayes had been answered, we got a DSN at my GP surgery. Yippees I thought and duly made an appointment. I took the obligatory list of questions when I saw her and got all of the answers I wanted at that time. I'll see you in three months she says at the end of the appointment. This was in June.

Anyway now almost three months and no appearance of appointment. On contacting surgery the nurse is not there anymore. makes you wonder what other people do who never get to see anyone supportive!

To answer your question, they ask to be referred to their nearest hospital's diabetes unit! Well, that's what I did when I found my local GP's DSN to be utterly useless anyway!

Aw, sorry to hear that Caroline! That DSN was the only good thing going for your surgery, wasn't she? Like Sam, I go to the hospital clinic for virtually anything diabetes related, but that's not always convenient I guess for a lot of people. Did they say where she went? To a rival surgery? Hunt her down!😉

They didn't say where the nurse had gone, she's gone. I think perhaps I will ask for a referal tot he hospital as a neighbour with the same doctor goes to the hospital. I still have the form she gave me to fill in for the next appointment asking how you feel, this week was going to be a good bad week to fill it in!

definitely get yourself to the local hospital's diabetes centre. They are so much better than what GP surgeries have to offer. Even if it's difficult to get to, (and it's a mission for me!) you only need to go every 4-6 or even 12 months and you can call whenever you want for advice or make an appointment with a DSN. Well I think it's the same for most hospitals, but obviously you'd need to find out how your local works 🙂

Actually i am toying with the idea of phoning them up and saying can I self refer. Can't loose anything.

Good for you! I'd always choose the hospital over my GP - they have specialists at the hospital whose only job is dealing with diabetes. The nurse at your GP's surgery deals with diabetes along with 2000 or so other things. Always go for the specialist!!

I have decided I'll take a day off and go to the hospital in person. I work in an open plan office, so phone not private and if I phone from home everyone else wants to put their six eggs in too!

go for it caroline nothing to lose , let us know how you get on

That is a shame. Did your surgery give any indication if she will be replaced? Some hospitals send their DSN's out into GP surgeries for a day a week so that peopel not under the hospital can see them, I think it's a good idea. Sorry to say but I don't think it's likely that you can self refer. And very few hospitals will see type 2's not on insulin/byetta/complications. But maybe you will get lucky in your area.
