Friday afternoon and I have sat down, with a weak g and t, and opened this month's copy of a well known food stores magazine....not T but S. It's a favourite magazine and I love the recipies and it's the Christmas edition. Nowadays my eye goes straight to the nutritional bit at the end of the recipies.........well....I wont be making many of these.....this is the first Christmas as a diabetic and although I am not a lover of mince pies or Christmas cake, I like my food especially if we have friends to stay. I know that I can have treats but there is a mindset and a limit to treats or there is the slippery road. !!!!!!!
We shan't be entertaining as such, turkey will be on the menu, and I am sad but appreciative of all the advice and support that is given on this forum. Another opportunity to shout out THANKS to all those who give their experience and expertise in this forum.Not sure if this makes sense but I know what I mean.....
 
Yes, they are a cracking bunch on here and keep me (by and large!) on the straight and narrow. That said, I will be having 3 small roasties with my christmas dins, and one parsnip in honey, followed by 1 spoonful of christmas pud doused in double cream. That'll do me!
 
They are a great bunch on here for the big day im just going to eat wot i fancy Carbs/Cals wot are they im going to think for the day
 
Well, fortunately, I don't like mince pies, Christmas pud or Christmas cake, not even the icing on the top, however I do like copious amounts of turkey, ham and pickles and a good cooked breakfast.

Mrs Alan will have a small individual Xmas pud which I will pour brandy over and set fire to, I so love that bit.

We will no doubt have friends over at some point for a drink or two, but nothing to outlandish.

The dogs will get more presents than us (as it should be), Amber will destroy most of hers within a few minutes while Jenjen (the dim one) just watches and just plays with whatever's left.

Aint life fun
 
I tend to be a little less rigid with my diet over Xmas but without being careless. I loved mince pies but they're a NoNo - just one has more carbs that a whole meal - but I will have a slice of Xmas cake minus the icing. Like @Vonny I'll have a couple of small roasties with Xmas dinner (as well as my usual celeriac mash) but I won't have any Xmas pudding.
 
I’ll have lots of turkey and veg, a couple of small roast potatoes and parsnips and a yorkshire pud. Never ate mince pies or christmas cake, so just a small slice of yule log and maybe sneak a baileys later on in the day. We never eat in the evening, too stuffed
 
My first Christmas with diabetes. Would normally have poached eggs on toast to start the day and still OK to have with less toast now. Lunch will be turkey crown with plenty of veg as normal but less roasties (boohoo) and gravy. Very small portion of pudding with double cream. Unfortunately will have to tell my brother not to send me the huge Hotel Chocolat box of goodies I normally get at Christmas. It's just way too tempting. Supper is always a light salad usually with salmon to finish off the day followed by a celebratory tipple before bedtime. NO decorations up till December though

Here’s something I've posted once or twice on the forum before, because it really struck a chord with me when I first read it.

It’s by Jennifer (of Jennifer’s Advice) who doesn’t get shared so much on the forum these days, but who wrote about her experience of life with diabetes with real pragmatism and wisdom. This is a small extract:

With the holidays coming up, give yourself permission to be human.There is a lot of great food that will be out there soon. Don't try to steel yourself against all of it. You most likely won't be able to, and then you'll have guilt on top of it.
Choose your times. And then enjoy a piece of cake. A dollop of mashed potato. That holiday cookie that only shows up once a year. Make it your CHOICE, not a moment of weakness that will haunt you. That way you'll be able to enjoy it so much more, AND not fall into the "well I messed up, might as well eat the plateful".
The other side is all the family you're likely to be around this season. Some may decide that they know what you should or shouldn't be eating. They'll announce loudly, "Sara can't have that, she has the diabetes". Exhausting. Or they'll push food on you "Oh come on, it's the holidays, you can have a taste". More exhausting.
Whatever you decide to eat or not eat, the most important thing is that YOU control it. If you choose to have some pumpkin pie, make it your conscious decision. Not a mindless "What the hell" or a forced "NO" through gritted teeth. You decide. Only you.
