They are easily the worst thing I have ever eaten!
They seem to be something that was grown in the Victorian kitchen garden but I suspect more for their ornamental value than having any edible merit.
Where did you eat them. Is it the stalk, root or prickly looking flower you eat?
 
We got them in our Riverford veg box. The stalk. They were incredibly bitter and astringent.
 
2nd half rewritten now. I have taken all links out as they get outdated. Google does a wonderful job if you just type in the veg name + recipes.

Thanks Patti. The fresh text pasted-in slightly strangely omitting some fancy ‘ligature’ characters (where a more elegant compound glyph is used for tt, ti, it, ttl etc).

I think I fixed most of them, but let me know if I missed any!
