I've just been booked on from my local Dietetics department to a 6 week course at my local hospital (thought I was just going for an appointment with a dietician!). This seems pretty in depth, what kind of thing does it involve?

Very difficult to answer your question @Beck S, as courses vary between areas. The only exceptions are that DESMOND courses for people with type 2 diabetes have a common syllabus, although can be delivered over varying patterns of days / weeks / weekends.
Your best bet is to ask someone at the department providing the course. If it's in Dietetics, hopefully it will also cover the importance and use of exercise and medication, as well as diet, in managing type 2 diabetes, plus things like dealing with stress and illness.

When I did Desmond it was 2 half days. This was down from the 'long' version of two days I've heard.
Xpert is 6 sessions. Or you might be on a local provision (some areas have neither DESMOND or expert).

You may very well have info on BG, it's use by the body, insulin, insulin resistance etc (rusty locks!).

The ones I did touched on Very basic, general healthy eating. And failed to say carbohydrates are important in any way.

There was also a lot of time spent on coronary heart disease, arteries and fat.

Along with some other bits.

Interesting to me to see just how different diabetes education is across the country - never considered that something could be so different across the same country. Thanks both.

I would like to answer but I was only diagnosed in june and the next course I might be able to get on is in February. Good thing I'm not expecting much.

Oh, sorry, I should have said. One area nearish to me has a seperate carbohyrate awaness session. One is listed for my area, except they are not actually running or promoting it.
So, depending on your area and course, you may have to ask for 'extras'.

Just finished week 2 of the course. It's from Xpert Health, and it seems to be quite decent so far. Started off with an explanation of what diabetes does to you and how it works and then a chat about people's concerns and questions. This week we talked about physical activity, balanced diets and portion sizes. Advice is definitely on the same lines as what I've seem with low carb diets and monitoring what you eat. Going well.

That's good to hear. I think you learn from other participants too, what's worked for them and what hasn't....also knowing that others are in the same boat and on the same learning curve as you. Great you didn't have to wait months to get on a course too. Glad you're enjoying it. 🙂
