It's annoying, isn't it? Still, the last time I came across this one, someone claimed that there is now some evidence that too much sugar does sometimes cause type II diabetes, excluding any effect on obesity. Is there any truth to that?
Sugar is just another form of carbohydrate, but as it is a fast-acting carb it probably puts a lot of stress on the pancreas to pump out insulin rapidly and for people who may be genetically inclined then this extra stress can be problematic. Having said that, white bread would have a similar effect, as it is very high GI.
