Back in April at my regular eye screening, maculopathy was spotted so I was referred to the hospital. I saw a Technician, who said I had a tiny macular cyst but nothing to worry about. So follow up was booked for 7/11. Saw another technician, who thought there’d been some changes so booked in for an urgent scan 3 days later. Report from them said I had pre-proliferative retinopathy grade 2. Very surprised because I never have high blood sugars. I’m on low doses of insulin and metformin and my hbac1 is 5.2 (33). The technician said it could be affected by illness, and I’d been really ill with shingles for a month. And she said I’d probably have laser to get rid of them. I was booked in 3 days later, but no doctor available so just had the same scan again. I was a bit upset by now that being ill could have caused this damage, completely out of my control. Anyway had another scan today and appt with doctor. She was actually a bit annoyed because she said the veins were transparent and not more advanced retinopathy, and that the scan had been read completely wrong. She said I have extremely mild retinopathy and the macular cyst is tiny and nothing to worry about atall. So basically a waste of time and stressing out for nothing. But thankyou Doctor for putting my mind at rest.

But you must have had high blood glucose to be prescribed insulin and other meds. /

Yes I had high blood sugar when I was diagnosed 2 years ago, but I managed to bring it under control pretty quickly. So yes I understand why I have background retinopathy but deterioration is caused by uncontrolled high blood sugar, which I don’t have and haven’t had for 2 years precisely because I take insulin. I’m a type 2, not 1 and have no problem keeping my glucose levels low

Sorry you’ve been put through such a worrying and stressful time @louisew

But glad that your eyes are in good shape, and you don’t need the laser treatment. Hopefully you’ll get further reassurance at your next eye screening appointment.

@louisew - I think flower that it is quite important for us to realise that retinopathy can happen to people without diabetes as well as 'us lot' and in any case - it's hardly 'your fault' that you just happened to get shingles, now, is it?

Blooming annoying, I wholeheartedly agree.

PS - very pleased you are actually OK anyway.

Thankyou, yes it’s a weight off my mind. I had a basal cell carcinoma removed a months ago (all fine) recovering from a torn meniscus (7 months and counting), so I could have done without it. And yes it’s surprising about illnesses causing damage, I was also told that my knee injury may have caused the macular cyst, as It wasn’t caused by high blood sugar. Who’d have known ?

Good grief Louise - first I've ever heard of such a thing!
