Hello,

I’m a mum of a 8 year old named Harry who was diagnosed with type one in March 2023 after going into DKA.
The a&e doctors kept sending him home saying there was nothing wrong with him, despite clear signs of diabetes and smelling like a fruit!
Luckily our GP listened to me did a quick ketone check and blue lighted him to hospital just in time!

The past 18 months have been a roller coaster; but now starting to settle down.
Harry still doesn’t do his diabetes care as it’s all a bit scary to him but this week he’s made huge progress in priming his pens independently.
nice to meet you all.

Welcome to the forum @MumOfADiabetic
Sorry to read how difficult Harry’s diagnosis was, but very pleased that you have found the forum. Lots of experience to tap into and plenty of support available.

Well done to Harry for taking the first step, priming his pen. It is great that you are taking things at his pace. I have been to many T1 Family weekends where youngsters have done their first injection on their own, and their ages vary widely.

Has Harry got a Libre sensor? That can certainly help you and his teachers in the monitoring of his levels and can provide alarms for lows and highs.

Keep in touch and let us know how you all get on.

Hi @MumOfADiabetic and welcome!

Last year must have been very worrying for you, I'm so sorry to hear that! But I'm glad you're on the right track and got the diagnosis. Parents who support their children need the support too and the forum has quite a few parents here, so if you'll have any questions or worries - don't be afraid to ask or share.

It will take some time for your boy to get used to things, there will be ups and downs, but prepping his pens is already a big step so good job Mum!

Hi and welcome. My son was diagnosed aged 8 and is now 14. They all find their way to take charge of their condition in different ways and there’s no rush for him to be doing everything for himself yet. We found the first year difficult but it does get easier. We did the first few years with pens and meter but are now in pump and sensor.

Hi there
It sounds like you are doing really well! My daughter was 6 at diagnosis, and the first year was tough, it does get easier though. She is 18 now and manages it all by herself and can’t really remember not having diabetes. In fact I’ve just realised that today is the 12 year diaversary…
However, I don’t want to hijack your thread with that! Well done to your lad for taking a step forward. They all learn at different rates and if you try to force him to do things too quickly it probably won’t end well, just let him do things when he’s ready. Look after yourself as well, it took me ages to really start to be more accepting of my daughter’s condition and not be thinking about it all the time. If you have any questions, do ask, nothing is too silly, we were all learners once!
