Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi folks
Just wanted to say thank you for the advice the other day.
I'm just back from the Doctor having been diagnosed Type 2. Am on Metformin and Simavastin and am not looking forward to the side-effects.
I'm actually quite devastated and so cross with myself. I'm about to go through my fridge and cupboards throwing out everything I can no longer eat; but if one more person tells me that "this is just the motivation you need to lose weight" I will slap their condescending face!

I sound bitter, but I am genuinely grateful to you for your advice.
Carrie

Please don't waste food - depends on what it is, please give it to neighbours, friends, night shelters, garden birds - or keep it and eat small portions over longer time.

Side effects aren't guaranteed, so you might be lucky, and if you experience them, do return to doctor, as there are alternative drugs in the same group or the same drug in different formulations.

Hi Carrie. Also, don't be cross with yoruself. None of us really saw it coming and there's millions who get away without a diagnosis, so don't be hard on yourself. Luck of the draw.

I like Copepod's idea of giving the food away you don't want to eat. Might help you to feel better about yourself and you can use the opportunity to educate others about diabetes if you feel inclined to.🙂

Hang on in there. You'll need to feel positive to make the most of the next few months, so stop the self-hate and give yourself a pat on the back for getting things sorted.

Hi Cattie, agree with the guys above, its not something you should blame yourself about, and you should feel good as you did the right thing and got some advice from here and went to the Dr. Well done for that. 🙂

Hi Carrie, I too was diagnosed type 2 in July this year and like you was totally devastated. I have been put on Metformin and thankfully had no side effects infact I have managed to loose nearly 2 stone. (still have about 5 to go) I blamed myself for eating too much and not taking care of myself and was also told by many a 'good wisher ' that it was just the motivation I need to loose weight! As if I didnt know that already lol. I read Gretchen Beckers amazing book 'The First Year Type 2 Diabetes' and in there she says that we must remember that having diabetes is not our fault. Yes we may have overeaten in the past but we need to have the gene in our body that causes Type 2 diabetes. There are overweight people who do not have type 2 diabetes and there are underweight people who have type 2 diabetes. It seems that people are really quite ignorant about 'our' illness.
Good luck with your meds, hopefully you will not have any side effects.

Hiya, been there done it got the tshirt, people can be so flipping ignorant... Hope the meds go ok... I was diagnosed in June, went on metformin, terrible stomach issues, have just persuaded gp to let me try slow release...
Good luck xxx

Hi Carrie,

As the others have said, don't be too hard on yourself. It's the hand you have been dealt and it's what you do with it now that counts. Don't be too eager to throw stuff away. If you can't find a good home for it, wait til you feel a bit calmer and see if it's all as bad as you think it is. My fridge is still full of stuff I shouldn't eat too much of because there are three non diabetic adults in my house as well as me.

Anger is a common emotion in the early days, but you will settle down and accept things as the days go by. Believe me though, you are well on the way to taking control of things. XXXXX
