Just got my results back from the doctors. Hba1c down from 6.4 in May 2011 to 5.7! My BP is "very good" and I am more than 2 stones lighter. Why? Because I found all of you!! Without the advice and support of this group, I could not have achieved these results. I have learned to test my BG to keep control, been spurred on to keep going when times have been tough (and they have!) and I have been able to ask for advice when I have been unsure.

There is a 'but' though! Although my kidney and liver function tests were fine, my cholesterol is a little raised at 5.2 (my LDL is higher than my HDL too), so there is more work to do. I also have another stone and a half to get to my goal weight. I will not revert back to eating whatever I like, but know that this lifestyle change is for life.

I have an appointment with my GP next week to discuss my results. The receptionist said he has put a ? statins on my notes, but I want to avoid these. any advice, suggestions etc very welcome!

Thank you to each and every one of you who have supported me (and my often daft questions) so far! I am so grateful. 🙂 Katie

What a lovely post! I'm so pleased to read this and I'm sure mine will be the first reply of many to remind you that all the hard work was yours, so well done you!!!

This is indeed a wonderful place with lots of support and advice from many wonderful people. I've let life get in the way recently and not been on here as much as I should, so, thank you too Katie for reminding me what I've been missing. And keep up the good work, you are doing amazingly well. XXXX

That is excellent Katie! A just reward for all your hard work, really pleased for you! 🙂

Put in the work and you get the results, well done 🙂

Fantastic results Katie well done.
All the credit is yours though as we gave you the tools and you used them to help yourself. 🙂

Fantastic news - well done, knew you could do it..... xx 🙂

Wonderful news on your HBA1c after all your hard work. Good to see it reaping dividends for you & hope the loss of a bit more weight will only improve it more.

You asked a question re possible statins; this I feel is a very personal choice & you'll need to add up the pros & cons to discuss with your GP. My be worth your while writing down what you want to know before you go. That way you'll know what you want to ask & feel in control; the decision is yours at the end of the day so don't feel pushed into taking them if you are not sure.

My personal experience is I did start a statin a very low "baby dose" my GP said. I haven't had any side-effects & my good/bad cholesterol are now in balance & at ideal levels. My total has always been in the normal range (currently 3.4). I took it to help correct the balance & I have a history of heart problems on my dads side of the family which is where the T2 is aswell.

Having said that I wouldn't increase the dose unless levels again became unbalanced. My dad has T2, heart problems since his early 40's (had by-pass in his 50's now has angina again) on top of kidney failure (on dialyses 3 days a week). I see every day the effect of heart problems for him & I don't want my quality of life to go the same way; so I'll take my "baby dose" but keep it under review.

Have a gret day & keep up the good work.

Thanks all so much for your messages. I have an appointment with the GP next Friday to discuss things, so will talk about possible courses of action re cholesterol. Is it possible that it may go down with further weight loss and adjusting my diet even further? I'd like to try that first. I have no history of heart disease on either side of family. On my dad's side - diabetes - on my mum's osteoporosis! So with no family history, I would like to avoid the statins if at all possible.

Thanks again. Katie🙂

I suggest you ask your GP for a referral to a Diabetes Specialist Dietician.

I have had a lot of help from them in achieving excellent control via diet and exercise.

Try eating a tin of oily fish every 3 days or so KatieB - bet you see an improvement in your HDL in 12 weeks! I did, simply having a tin of pilchards on toast for breakfast every 2 days in 6.

I never thought about that as a breakfast option! Will give it a go! I already eat salmon a couple of times a week and I take cod liver oil every day, so will try pilchards too! Thanks for your help. 🙂 Katie
