Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi Everyone, just an intro. I have been Diabetic type 2 for nearly 3 years now and during that time, I have been prescribed with a variety of different meds, which began with Metformin which within a couple of weeks had me climbing the walls with stomach cramps and upsets. I was then placed on a slow release version which did much the same. Gliclizide was then prescribed which wasn't effective, then Empaglaflozin. This gave me urine infection after urine infection and I finally ended with a kidney stone, which I suspect was caused by this medication. Needless to say I dropped this medication and was recently put onto Humilin M3 twice a day, plus 2 x 40mg of Gliclizide.. So far so good. I might add I have also taken steps to reduce my intake of carbs. Boring intro over, I look forward to being in the group

Welcome to the forum. There are plenty of people who will be willing and have lots of experience of insulin use to answer any questions you have.
Often when a number of different oral medications and dietary changes are not effective in blood glucose levels remain high then people may find they are misdiagnosed and are actually Type 1 or LADA for which there are tests that can be done to check. However there will still be people who are Type 2 and do need insulin.
What advise have you been given about balancing your diet (carb intake) with your medication. Is this causing you any issues that people may be able to help you with or do you feel you are now well managing your condition.

I am early days with insulin, but so far so good. Numbers are coming down on BG levels. I have been doing some extensive reading on the subject of carbs, but I will be returning to this forum for advice once my initial stage of getting dosages correct is well underway. I thank you for your support. Like I'm guessing with most people, during the Covid crises, support was a hard thing to come by. Thank you

Welcome to the forum @Timjenuki

Thanks for your detailed introduction

Sorry to hear it has taken a while for you to find a combination of meds that works for you. I often think T1s have it easy in that respect - just going straight onto insulin with no messing about.

Humulin M3 is a mixed insulin with a fixed proportion of long-acting ‘background’ and rapid acting ‘mealtime’ insulins. Depending on how much homegrown insulin you are still producing, and whether your insulin is a top-up or more of a total insulin replacement - mixed insulins can be a little inflexible and quite difficult to live with. In time you may find that a fully flexible basal/bolus insulin regime is more appropriate.

Keep us posted with how you get on 🙂
