I really need to thank @Northerner and @everydayupsanddowns for their fantastic work on here, the work of the much missed previous moderators and everyone else who supports and belongs to this forum.

I went way outside my comfort zone yesterday to a severe complications clinic and I wish I could unsee what I saw there. The coalface of dealing with devastating diabetic complications is not for the fainthearted and it is sadly not uncommon. The waiting room was wall to wall plus the corridors too, I haven't been able to eat today for the sickening feeling such realities brought home to me.

We are such a friendly, supportive. helpful group and this site has helped me beyond words to discuss things I had been unable to say before, I couldn't even say I was diabetic out loud for the first 35 years before I joined here.

I wish our forum was the reality for all who have to deal with diabetes but sadly that is not the case. It is easy to forget the pain and suffering of others who aren't in a position to join such a network or who for whatever reasons are not given the support or are unable to deal with the full seriousness of diabetes.

I am determined to keep the best control I can so nobody can tell me I haven't tried my best despite living with serious complications from my 20's.

Thank you everyone on here for all that you do. It's not until you look further afield that reality smacks you in the face.:(

I know what you mean, flower. I was lucky to have a good DSN that gave me the same dietary advice as I found on here, but most diabetics are not that lucky. When I worked as a patient transport driver, I took plenty of diabetics with serious complications & not all of them were old either. Some were amputees, some were blind and numerous numbers on dialysis.

Gosh Flower, I am sorry about how that clinic affected you. I had a similar experience when my mother in law was in a neurological hospital. It took me a long time to deal with what I saw on her ward.

You are a marvelous person who is very courageous and very much part of the forum. I agree that this place is brilliant. Thank you to all who make it such a good forum.

I second everything you say about the moderators and their great support this forum offers. Sorry your day was harrowing but I hope there was at least some positivity from the day for you

Totally in agreement with you Flower-joining this forum is the best thing I have ever done- D related. 🙂

This forum is a soul saver if not a life saver!

Would not only be lost without it, but also alone, in a world that just doesn't get it.

I have been reading all of the JDRF posts on type one supporters, people who help you out with diabetes. For me it is all of you on here, and sadly nobody else, as they hasnt got the same understanding to get their heads round it.

xx

I absolutely endorse what you say Flower. I've only been a member of this forum for a couple of months, but the knowledge I have gained is tremendous. One of the contributors, (can't remember who it was), made a comment about ending your days as a blind amputee on dialysis, that above all else really hit home. I'm lucky to be reasonably fit, I've got my numbers to acceptable levels, and apart from a couple of hypo's when I first started controlling my input, and because I'm losing weight too I'm feeling as well as I have for years. 🙂
I'm determined to beat this thing, and with the help and support of this forum I will.

I have said it before, I will say it again and I will continue shouting it from the rooftops. This forum and its members have been an actual Godsend to me and a lifeline to sanity back in the UK while I am here. Without it and the guidance and advice from everyone I really don't know what I would have done and I would have been in dire straits. That is no exaggeration. It has also highlighted to me just how lucky I am in being able to handle what is in fact a chronic condition when others are really struggling and need a lot of support and the odd hug or two.
I say tthis is all sincerity.

Yes, me too, and meeting some of you in Cheltenham last week was very enlightening and helpful.
