Testing before driving

Hi all,
I have cystic fibrosis related diabetes, my blood sugars spike after certain lunch and dinner meals but are fine at other times, so I have just been prescribed 2 units of Novarapid with meals that are likely to cause problems. (I was previously on levemir but ended up getting lots of hypos and then my blood sugars stabilised anyway so I haven’t been on insulin for about 18 months, but now the sugars have crept up again.)

The biggest hassle for me is testing before driving, as it’s one more thing to remember on top of the huge pile of c**p I already have to do to treat my cystic fibrosis. What I’m wondering is whether I really need to test before driving in the morning, if I haven’t taken Novarapid since the previous evening? My understanding is that it only stays in your system for a few hours, so that seems rather unnecessary but I can’t find anything to address that question. Is it still a legal requirement? Does anyone know?
Thank you!

Hello Josie-Jo,
I would be inclined if it were me to ring the DVLA and ask them. Or better still email them so you have the reply in writing and black and white.
Do the DVLA know you are on insulin? If not then you need to tell them.

As you have CF are you not entitled to have the Libre prescribed on the NHS?

Thanks Pumper_Sue, that’s helpful. I hadn’t even thought of emailing them!
Re the Libre, yes I just found out about that today, and it definitely sounds like it could make life easier. Am I right in thinking it’s constantly monitoring so the data is there whether you scan or not? That sounds like it will really help to get a fuller picture of how my sugars are, especially as with CF they can change and get better and worse depending on lots of other factors!
Looks a bit bulky though - do you use it? What’s it like to wear?

Oh and yes they know I’m on insulin, I told them when I started it before and never bothered telling them I’d stopped!

Hi Josie-Jo,
I use an insulin pump and the Dexcom CGM (continuous glucose monitor) I love the extra freedom it gives me plus the security of knowing where my numbers are. Have a look on the web for videos of the Libre and also on the main forum for peoples opinion.

I noticed on your first post that you thought the novo only lasted a few hours...…….. It lasts between 5 and 7 hours average being 5 hours I think. 🙂
