Tested before main meal at 6.3 after more than two hours 8.4.
Meal was grilled salmon and prawns with salad of peppers , onions, cucumber and baby plum tomatoes dressed with olive oil. Sugar free jelly as desert. Should sugar rise like this after a meal without carbs? My morning read was 8.1 then I got it to 6.3 at eleven o’clock after walking and it stayed there until after meal at qtr to nine. Any help appreciated.

Am i right in thinking the toms, peppers and onion contain carbs so i imagine a rise is normal. Although i could stand corrected.

Yes, all contain some carbs - so low carb but not carb free.
A rise of 2.1 is fine.

Hello @annealex1
The meal you describe sounds like a very good low carb meal, and the sort of thing that I eat quite often.
There are a few carbs in the veggies but I wouldn't expect such a result on those alone 2 hours after eating this.

It could be an error with your meter reading, - this is not unusual and occurs for all sorts of reason. On several occasions when I have had an unexplained high reading, I have taken another reading of few minutes later and got a different result.

However, we are all different and re-act differently to a range of foods, so it could be that there is something in the mix of what you had, that for you is a 'red' food and puts your readings up.
Unlikely, but the suspect could be the sugar free jelly! Sometimes product labelled low sugar can still be high in carbs. Might be worth checking the label.

That’s a great result @annealex1 - and it sounds delicious! You aren‘t going to feel deprived if you keep eating lovely meals like that.

Bear in mind too that home BG meters have a bit of in-built variability, so there could be a bit of variation from strip to strip even from the same drop of blood.

But a rise of 2.1 after a meal is a fantastic result!

The other thing to note is you are assuming your bg stayed at 6.3 - just because it was 6.3 at1100 and 6.3 before the meal does not mean it didn't go up or down or both in between!

Thanks I will now retest if I get a higher than expected number. Im logging it all food and B.S. reading

Is 2.1 really that much of a jump?

No, although depends on the quantities of peppers, onions and tomatoes eaten. Modern varieties of tomatoes can be very sweet - don't stop eating them, but maybe watch the amounts? But a rise of 2ish is fine, I certainly wouldn't be wasting a strip on a retest on those figures!

Yes they do have carbs but not many to the meal so it fits in with low carb. Point taken though so thanks will watch portion size.

Thanks for this post because that is the question I am trying to figure out. Is an increase of 2 okay if it takes you over the magic 7 I keep reading about? It seems its okay. Today to continue the 'test test test' I had an English breakfast and counted the carbs under 2 for the food and 4.7 for 100ml of whole milk so under 7 in total. No increase in reading in fact, a bit down. Thanks for your contribution. I am going to have the same salad today with barbecued chicken not fish and so I will test.

To me an increase of 2.1 is about right and i personally wouldn't even give myself insulin for that rise but thats just my personal choice as i like to sit around that range anyway.

For T2s, 4 - 7 is the target range before meals, but 2 hours after a meal the target is less than 8.5, so your 8.4 was OK.

The meters aren't accurate enough to say that the rise is 2.1 in any case, so the readings are consistent with a range of changes. 2.1 feels small enough to me not to worry too much.

I’m more than happy with 9 after a meal personally 🙂

An increase of only 2-3 is ideal @annealex1 - well done :D

I got a higher than normal reading after eating some small tomatoes which would have been too soft for my taste next day - but I should have been more careful - they are higher in sugar than the ordinary salad tomatoes, and I sloshed some vinegar dressing onto them and never noticed.

Yes they were small and sweet
