Just collected my first batch of test strips. It has taken me since September to get them and I can only have 50 per month, but I feel that I have won an important point for other type 2's. I think testing is vital for successful control. :D

Excellent news happydog! Shame it's not more, but definitely progress! 🙂

That's about 1.6 tests a day! Anyone know how to do .6 of a test?

You could try putting in another prescription every three weeks until you build up a stock. The surgery may not spot what you are doing.

Wow, my doctor didn't hesitate to give me a prescription of strips when I saw him on Monday. (First time he's prescribe me medication/associated guff to do with diabetes).

Shame he couldn't tell me that I could get it for 'free' and I ended up paying ?15 for the medication and the strips.

You need to get an Exemption Card, and I think you may be able to get your prescription money back as you shouldn't have paid it 🙂 I just tick the box 'E' and sign the form - as I have diabetes medication on the scrip then any pharmacist should know that you don't have to pay - I never have to show the card. 🙂

You need to get a form signed by your Dr to say you are a diabetic on insulin (should be available from the surgery), send it off and await the plastic credit card type card which will arrive. If you need meds meantime explain to the pharmacy that you are awaiting an exemption card and request a proper receipt (NOT the till receipt - they will know what you need). When you get the card you will need to send off the reciepts for a refund. As I said, till receipts don't count.

Thanks for your replies. Unfortunately Highlander our prescriptions are electronic and are sent directly from the doctor to the pharmacy so no chance of getting any additional prescriptions. Doctor was so adamant that the annual test was all that was needed I think it is quite a turnaround that he is prepared to give any strips at all. I will keep pushing the boundaries. 🙂
