A TERMINALLY ill man has finally been told the NHS will pay for treatment which may extend his life ? after he spent ?12,000 on the drugs.

Ian Morrison who suffers from bowel and lung cancer was paying ?3500 a month for Cetuximab.

The drug is widely available in England but health chiefs told dad-of-four Ian it was reserved for ?exceptional? cases where patients could show proof it would make a significant difference.

So the 56-year-old used savings and help from family to pay for the treatment.

Then he received a letter out of the blue, saying the NHS would pay for the drug. But Ian was given no explanation for the U-turn which came after he was twice refused help by NHS Lothian.

And he hit out yesterday, warning of a ?two-tier? system.
