Hi guys,

I'm mega confused and was hoping to get some advice. I'm a type 2 diabetic previously on metformin. I'm now pregnant 🙂 and have been put on insulin for the duration of my pregnancy but after the birth I should be straight back to just the tablets.

My diabetes specialist midwife at the hospital said I didn't need to notify thr DVLA and gave me a leaflet where she'd highlighted temporary insulin was N/A. However, when I got home I noticed the leaflet was from 2012 so got a little scared and looked it up online.

Online it says, "Drivers who are under medical supervision by a doctor do not need to notify if insulin is used for a temporary period only (less than three months, or for gestational diabetes less than three months after delivery) unless they have problems with hypos/severe hypos/hypo unawareness"

As I was already diabetic before the pregnancy would this still count as 'gestantional diabetes' and as long as I'm off it 3 months after delivery I don't have to notify them? I'll be on it for over 3 months. I can't seem to find anything for existing type 2s on temporary insulin for pregnancy anywhere.

Any advice/opinions would be much appreciated as I can imagine it being a very confusing conversation with the DVLA .

Thanks

Off the top of my head I would say the nurse is right, but it’s best to check.

Thanks for the advice Lin - I'll give them a call wen they open 🙂

To be honest, were I in your shoes, I'd call and inform the DVLA and my insurers of the change to my diabetes management, because you're on the safe side, and the time to find out you (or someone you trusted) misinterpreted the rules is not at the time of an incident or accident.
