Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi I wrote on here few weeks ago about waiting two months to hear from someone to tell me i was type 2 diabetic. Eventually a diabetic nurse rang me and was lovely. She started me off on one metformin tablet which i started saturday. I did state that i am wheat and gluten intolerant. Ive had two tablets sat and sunday but last night started with vomiting and dioreeah which i still have.I rang my surgery this morning and its just a voice saying there is no one available to speak to you. if its an emergency call 999. Well its not a 999 emergency I just need to speak to a nurse who can tell me what to do. Why is it so hard to get basic care. I'm in tears with the level of care I have received in all of this. I'm going to call the phamacy now to see if they can help...

So sorry to hear that you’ve had a nasty reaction to the metformin @Sullipepper

It does seem to give some people more of an upset stomach than others, and for many the gastric upheaval settles down in a few days.

Some find it helps to take the tablet with a reasonably substantial lowish carb meal.

Hope you can manage to get hold of your nurse for some support and advice.

Thankyou. I took it with porridge oats.

Hopefully some of our experienced metformin users will be along with their hints and tips. I’m not sure of anyone has noticed any association between the time of day the tablets are taken (morning/evening) and the reaction? I know most people start on a low dose, and gradually increase it to help lessen the symptoms.

Welcome to the forum, these are symptoms people find when they first start on metformin but I would persist in trying to call to speak to your surgery.
Taking some rehydration liquid will help keep your electrolyte balance.
Depending on how much porridge you had it may not have been particularly low carb.

Thankyou... it was 20g (boxed) cooked on the hob as I read the sashes contain lots of sugar.

Sorry to read about your experience with the side effects from the new meds. Some people on here have found that a switch to the slow release version of Metformin has helped them. I am sure others will be along with other tips.

Thankyou. The Dr just rang me and said she is sending out a prescription for the slow release one. She said I may not tolerate this one either as my reaction was quite nasty, but I will give it ago. If this doesn't work she said they will need advice. What a rollercoaster....

Hi. Most people who have problems with the standard Metformin have the problem solved with the Slow Release version. A few can't tolerate that either. Sadly NICE recommends the standard version is prescribed first which is pretty silly as the SR version is only a bit more expensive.

Until you get your numbers under control, high carbohydrate foods are something to be wary of - particularly combined with Metformin.

Very pleased that they have sorted that out for you, and I hope that the slow release version works for you.

Metformin tried to turn me inside out - it was dreadful. I stopped taking them and just stuck to low carb foods along with protein and fats - by the time I had a second Hba1c I was no longer diabetic. I did not really need medication in the first place, I am simply unable to cope with carbohydrate in my diet. reducing it solved the problem, and I have lost 50 lb at least, and so many sizes - I used to buy XXL and now I can wear an M
