Leaving more than 15 teams trailing behind on day four of the Dubai Tour, Team Novo Nordisk sprinted into a top 10 finish in the competition’s second edition on February 7 — an impressive feat given that 11 out of the 18 riders were advised to give up competitive cycling all together.
“I was told to stop for a few months after I was diagnosed in the middle of a race,” domestique rider Chris Williams told Khaleej Times.
The condition Williams is referring to is Type 1 diabetes, and though Team Novo Nordisk competes in some of the most intense cycling races on the planet, all team riders are living with the disease.
Noted as the first professional team in any sport that is made up entirely of people with Type 1 diabetes, Australia-born Williams and fellow rider, Martijn Verschoor say they don’t want to be alienated them from other “normal” competitors.
