It is extremely important that schools understand the special needs of children with diabetes and allow them certain liberties such as eating during classes, a senior doctor has said.

Addressing the media at an event organised by the Qatar Diabetes Association (QDA), Dr Mahmoud Alzoud, paediatric consultant at Hamad hospital?s endocrine and diabetes section, said there was a strong need to create awareness among the staff at schools, including teachers, bus drivers etc, to take care of the special requirements of children with diabetes.

?Some children may have to go to the washroom more than other kids or may need to eat something in order to maintain their glucose level. So, the teacher must understand that and not punish the children instead,? Dr Alzoud said.

The QDA recently celebrated the second phase of the Rights of Students with Diabetes programme. The organisation also highlighted its special 72-page guide book, ?Diabetes Guide Empowering Students?, which is available in both Arabic and English. The guide includes the contributions of Oryx GTL and Qatar American Women?s Association.
