A man who, for the past 19 years was refusing to have his leg (below his knee) amputated to stop his diabetic condition from getting worse, has finally had it removed.

Since 1993, Mfanukhona Shongwe (44), a teacher at Siphofaneni Primary School, has been in and out of hospital trying to treat a wound that began on his foot.

This wound forced doctors at the Mbabane Government Hospital to amputate Shongwe?s leg after it was discovered that he had diabetes.

Diabetes, often referred to by doctors as diabetes mellitus, describes a group of metabolic diseases in which the person has high blood glucose (blood sugar), either because insulin production is inadequate, or because the body?s cells do not respond properly to insulin, or both. Patients with a high blood sugar level typically experience polyuria (frequent urination), become increasingly thirsty (polydipsia) and hungry (polyphagia). Shongwe?s leg was removed on August 8 after the doctors successfully convinced him. All these years, he did not comprehend why his leg had to be removed because he thought it would ultimately heal.

He only agreed to have the life-changing operation in July this year.
