Hi my name is Taz and I have just got my results back sayiny positive my head is all over the place :-🙂-(

Hello Taz, welcome to the forum. Have you been put on drugs yet, or are you starting with diet and exercise? Have you been given any goals/diet plans yet? Tell us a bit more and post any questions. 🙂

Hi Taz, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, but please don't panic! Diabetes is a serious condition, but it is something that you can learn to manage well with the right amount of effort and knowledge. Many people find that the adaptations they make to their diet and activity levels actually results in them feeling happier and healthier than they have done for some time.

Have you been given any medication for your diabetes? How did you come to be diagnosed? A good place to start is by reading Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter. I would also recommend getting a copy of Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker. All this should give you a good understanding and grounding in what you need to do to restore your health. Try not to get overwhelmed by everything, and take things one step at a time - this is often described as a marathon, not a sprint, so take time to understand things - you don't have to totally transform your life from Day 1 🙂

Something that is very useful is to start a food diary so that you can see exactly what your diet consists of. Record everything you eat and drink, and try to include the amount of carbohydrate in everything. After recording this for a week or two you can start looking at areas that might be improved by either reducing portions or substituting high carbohydrate items with lower carb ones e.g. fewer potatoes and more green veg.

Please let us know if you have any questions - nothing is considered 'silly', so if it is confusing or bothering you, then ask! 🙂

It's most likely that you are Type 2 as if Type 1 is suspected it is usually treated as an emergency and you would be likely to feel very ill in a matter of days (but not always, people can vary quite a lot). Make the appointment soon and let us know how things go 🙂 Try not to worry, there are hundreds of people here who have learned how to control their diabetes very well and there is no reason why you shouldn't as well. It doesn't need to stop you doing anything you want to do.

Welcome to the forum Taz 🙂

Advice please
If you have weight to loose - try to loose it. Easier said then done but plenty of support here.

Metformin works in the background and can take between 2 weeks and a month to have an impact on you average levels. Not everyone gets on with it and there is a slow release version that is friendlier on the tummy.

The advice orginally posted by Northerner still holds true for you.

Welcome to the forum Taz You will get good advice on this site and do have a look around to see what other people's experiences are and hopefully you won't feel as alone as we all have when we joined back in the day

Metformin im on 2 day and yes I have to lose some weight ' im confused with what I can and can't eat I see the nurse next week though

Technically you can eat anything in moderation. But... It depends how well you can discipline yourself.

The metformin should help you with loosing weight as it can have an appetite surpression effect. Many of us follow the concept of a low to medium carbohydrate diet - that doesn't work for everyone but it can be helpful. Reducing your consumption of bread and potatoes is a good start.

Many of us also find that "healthy" breakfast cereals are anything but since they are absolutely packed with carbohydrates!

You will probably find that the advice from the nurse isn't all that helpful.

Hi mark thanks for the advice at the moment I am eating special k for breakfast ' also instead of potatoes is brown rice or pasta or cous cous ok and wat about brown bread ?

Only way to know what food is right for you is to test blood glucose before eating, then testing 2 hours after. Record blood glucose levels, plus type and amount of food - amount (weight, number of spoons etc, whatever is easiest for yoru to record) is often ignored, but portion size is a vital part of diet. A small amount of something you like may be OK - as long as you can restrain yourself and not eat lots of it! 🙂

Hi taz welcome, brown rice is ok, bread wise if u could try and find burgen bread in your supermarket it's yummy, also I have a lil fave I like which is brown pitta with various filling r.e chick salad or houmus and cheese tucked inside its a filling snack to have occasionly

Meters aren't expensive if you can ask a company to send you one for free - most company websites have phone numbers and / or contact forms and / or email addresses. Even if you have to buy, you can get one for under ?10, usually with 10 strips included in pack. It's strips that are expensive - around ?20 for 50 strips.
