Ok, this might seem a little leftfield, but. . .

Why do tattooists now ask if you are diabetic (amongst other things) when you fill out the questionnaire before being tattooed?

I have five at the moment and would like more - but four were done before diagnosis. The fifth was just after, and I lied on the form :(

Is there some real reason for it, or is it more a case of misinformation. . .?

They have to know for their ins to be valid and also to make sure they give appropriate advice. They would also need to know you have good control as high numbers will lead to possible infection.

Thanks Pumper_Sue. Do you think then that some tattooists could and do refuse to tattoo diabetics?

Also, as with a lot of massage therapists and waxers, they have to know in case there is any loss of sensation caused by the diabetes.....

In that industry I think this is the main reason.......and possibly with some tattooists........

Oh I'd not thought about that, another valid point. . .

They would be in their right minds to refuse if blood sugars are not stable or under control, due to the very high risk of infection.

Its very likely though that most tattooist's wont have the facility to test your blood sugar on site......

I haven't had a tat for over a year so there may be new rules out there......🙂

I would imagine, as well as the other reasons, they'd need to know if/what to do if you dropped low - people can have different reactions.

Hmmm, I suppose then it all comes down to what is classed as 'under control'. Being honest I think I would like to be more under control than I am, but it's not too bad. . .

I found this tattoo declaration form here, which states that it's due to reduced healing and possible 'severe' infection. All the other points mentioned are still valid, but whether or not the tattooist realises these is another question.
My tattooist knew I was diabetic due to the design I had, I still had to declare it and told them my control was good. They saw me test before we started and once during as well. I had some food/drink handy if needed. No problems at all. I definitely wouldn't recommend lying on the declarations that you sign 😉

In my defence... I lied because the tattoo I had done after diagnosis was the date I gave up smoking, and I'd tried loads of times to give up and nothing else had worked, so I was determined to have it. Not big and not clever to lie I know. But that's why.

Thanks for the link 🙂

I was also told by a tattoo place that they would be happy to do a tattoo anywhere I wanted but not my legs or feet.

What's that then. . .?

Cheryl Cole's 'rose garden'...

Oh my - no, I wasn't going to have one quite as big 😉
