Changing lifestyles and rapid urbanization have been blamed as the main causes of the rising cases of diabetes in Arusha, the rest of Tanzania and the African continent, according to experts.
Among these are four shared risks of unhealthy diets, physical inactivity, tobacco use and excessive consumption of alcohol.
"These trends can be seen across the entire African continent and they are set to increase in the next 20 years", the deputy minister for Health and Social Welfare Dr. Seif S. Rashid said in Arusha recently.
He told the First African Diabetes Conference, held at the AICC, that the prevalence has increased to about seven per cent now from one to two per cent in the 1980s.
Also in Tanzania, the rate of hypertension, a disease which is associated with diabetes, currently stands at 27 per cent from around 10 to 15 per cent during the same period.
