Just got home from the GP. And I am in shock I think!

Where do I start!
She had a few blood results back. She said when I had my first test done (not sure which one!) it was 13, now it had gone up to 18.
She suspects I am actually slow onset type 1.

She has started me on Novomix30. I am feeling rather overwhelmed by it all. I am excited because I am hoping this gets my levels down. Now starting to suffer numbness in my feet and fingers, and my eyesight changing. But on the other hand, it's quite shocking to me that I have to now inject. I don't have a problem doing it, but I guess I can't quite believe I am at this point.

So dinner is cooking, and I am going to take my first jab just before dinner.

I am a mix of emotions right now.

I want to thank you all for your support...you have all been wonderful.

Hi Doddy,

I should think you do have a mix of emotions. It probably will all feel a bit much at the moment, but I should imagine when you start injecting (although I never have!) you will start to feel much better and then it will probably sink in and not seem so bad.
The T1's on here seem to offer excellent advice with their many years of experience so you are definitely in the right place for support.

I hope things go okay for you - try not to worry too much.🙂

Hi Doddy, I can't say I'm too surprised, given the readings you have been having and the lack of impact of any of your medication so far - it's a shame it has taken so long to come to this conclusion. Hopefully, things will soon become much improved for you. Mixed insulins aren't ideal, but it may be appropriate for you to start with and see how you get on. You may experience much lower levels than you are used to, which may not be actual hypos but you may still get hypo symptoms due to your body being accustomed to much higher levels lately. Always test if you feel anything unusual, and if you do find yourself heading below 4.0 then make sure you have something sweet - the usual rule is 15g of sugar which can be something like 3 jelly babies or 150ml of full-sugar coke or lucozade etc.

Good luck with your first injection! I hope that you are in regular contact in case doses need adjustment. 🙂

Well, I did my first jab...and it was ok 🙂 Really not as bad as I thought it would be!!

How soon should I expect to see changes? I just did a reading, 1hr after eating, and it is still my usual high figures! I couldn't wait till 2 hrs as I was eager to see! But i will test again at 2hrs.

The GP said she might add another insulin further down the line, but to see how I go with this. She still mentioned byetta as a possibility, mainly to try and get my weight down, she did warn me that insulin would make me put on weight :(

I am dreading that first hypo....but I guess I have a way to go before this becomes a possibility!
I have bought lucozade and some dextrose tabs to keep in my bag...gonna have to buy a rucksake with everything I need to carry with me now!

The GP told me to email her on Saturday with my figures, and she will make any adjustments needed...she really is rather lovely, takes her time to explain everything, and has a lovely manner.

Still feels all a bit unreal, guess it will take a few days to all sink in and become part of my everyday life.

a bit unsure about the DVLA...do you call or what? Will they stop me from driving? I have only just regained my licence (due to Epilepsy) and am keen not to lose it!

Well done Doddy! 🙂 Try not to worry too much about your first hypo, you will most likely have been started on a low dose of insulin so that you can work your way up to a better dose. It's funny, but I spent 8 days in hospital being injected by others, but it only dawned on me on the evening after I'd been discharged that, yes, I'd have to do it myself now! You will quickly get used to it. Your GP sounds very supportive now, which is good. It's not necessarily true that you will put on weight with insulin, it's a case of finding the balance that works best for you.

You do need to inform the DVLA as well as your insurer, now you are on insulin, although I'm not sure of the procedure as I don't drive. I believe you will be issued with a 3 year license that needs renewal.

We're all here for you, so let us know if there's anything we can do to help with. 🙂

I think I am a long way off my first hypo! But at least the insulin will be gradually titrated so hopefully the BG will come down slowly....i presume anyway!

I was surprised at how easy it was to inject...I am going to show my sis in law tomoz how to do it...in case I am unwell and unable to do it...I think she thinks my seizures are gonna kick off and I won't be able to do it! Bless her!

I am scared to tell the DVLA but know I must....:(

You have all been absolutely wonderful, and I am so glad i found this forum 🙂

Hope you see improved levels soon now that you have started on insulin.
