Hi,
I am hoping to be on here more from now on, I am making time for me.My son has not been to school for 15 months due to anxiety and doesn't look like going anytime soon so that has been hard with endless meeting, appointments etc.I have had terrible control for a few years, I was okay when I was just on metformin but when I went on insulin I was a different matter. When I was diagnosed I had a five year old and a two year old . The five year old was diagnosed with autism exactly a month before I was diagnosed with diabetes, I didn't know which one I was grieving for and I struggled emotionally with it all. They are 12 and 10 now.

After a year on metformin, I had to go onto insulin , I become very fearful of hypos and kept my blood higher because of that fear. I still hate lows but have become better with the fear. I have had a few scares this yearwith diabetes, minor changes in my eyes, then there was protein in urine but had to do two more tests and I was all clear, now my legs are hurting so feel a wake up call this week. I have stopped all snacking, my god what a difference that has made. Before I used to go to bed with a 15 , now it is more like 7 , the mornings have seen a huge difference ,from being 15-20mmol, they have been below 10 all week, I get DP so I am so pleased.

Anyway must go, I am teaching my child about the titanic today and making a model of it.

Good for you Daisy! That has been a tough time for you, and your little one. I think it can happen to a lot of parents, especially when their children are young, that they tend to concentrate their attention on their children and can end up neglecting themselves in the process. Plus, you have additional concerns because of the autism.

It's really good to hear that you are determined to turn things around - things will be so much better for you if you can improve your control. Hopefully, you will feel brighter and have more energy to devote to your children, and less need to worry about horrible things like possible complications 🙂

What insulin are you on?

Good luck, and remember we are here to support you in whatever way we can 🙂 Enjoy the Titanic project! 🙂

Hi Daisy, lovely to hear from you again 🙂 Sorry you have had such a tuff time and hopefully things will continue to improve for you now.

I am on levemir twice a day and novorapid for meals plus 4x500g of metformin.

Have you been taught carb counting? I know it's often not provided for T2s on insulin, which has always struck me as silly! 🙄

I have Carb counting books but haven't been on anything official. I guess my levemir, I use 35 at night and 15 in the morning. I guess everything really ,hence why I am either low or high. The diabetes centre don't have time . I said last time that I didn't know if my levemir was right but I just got told that I should know it is right by my blood sugars, wasn't given any help what so ever. I have 15 carbs in the morning and need 10 units rapid for it and sometimes 15 units if I am high before hand. But it has been hard to care for myself when my son has and is still in a bad place mentally, I haven't had the will to bother. I need a lot more insulin in the morning, less for lunch and tea. Will have to dig those books out again, I think.

So far watched some you tube videos on the titanic, my son especially loved the ones that were done in a Lego animation and mine craft! But he has learnt something so all is good.

I need a lot more insulin in the morning too, it's quite common as people tend to be more insulin resistant early on in the day, plus your liver is probably releasing extra glucose into your blood as you wake. It would be worth having a read of this:

http://diatribe.us/issues/13/learning-curve

it's all about how to test if your basal insulin is set correctly. Ask if you have any questions about it! Food diaries can be very helpful in spotting patterns in your blood sugar levels or areas for improvement in your diet, although I appreciate you probably have a very busy life! Perhaps scribble things down throughout the day and then write them up when you have a bit more time to yourself in the evening?

There's also a good online carb counting course at:

🙂

,Thanks you, will do a diary , will fill it in throughout the day, unfortunately evenings are my worst time of the day for time to myself but during the day is better when I have just one child with me so will get some reading done then . I used to be on 45 units of .levemir at night but it would run out at about 5.00 pm so I split it now, I need more at night to help with the DP which starts at about 4.00am.
